A WELL DESERVED REWARD

There was an article in today's Tribune about a New Albany citizen who received an award this past Tuesday. The honoree is former City Councilman Bill Schmidt.

Mr. Schmidt was awarded for his service with the Solid Waste Board. He served on this board from it's beginning in 1992 until December 2007. Executive Director Warren Nash said that to his knowledge no other board has had a member who has served the entire tenure of the board.

This is just one example of Bill's loyalty. He has served with numerous organizations for many years and deserves awards from each of them. Our community is lucky to such a citizen.

I am truly honored to call Bill Schmidt my friend.

For 16yrs Councilman Bill Schmidt hs been a champion for all of the citizens of New Albany, not just in his district. Where there has been a need for food, clothing, a place to live or a shoulder to lean on Councilman Schmidt has always been there. Am I calling Councilman Schmidt a saint? No...I am saying this is an honorable man who loves this city.

When homes were flooded or burned both he and his wife were there helping people move out, moving furniture, saving what they could. They lifted, pulled, spent hours at the laundry mat.

On Christmas Eve 2007 a grandmother contacted Councilman Schmidt and told him her grandchildren had nothing for Christmas. Mr. & Mrs. Schmidt stepped up to the plate and gave from the heart. Using their own money they made sure the family had a Christmas meal and presents for the children. They have never asked for a pat on the back or even a thank you.

He has always been there for the little people of our town, serving on various boards and giving his time and effort. Many times he has been attacked and slandered but he stands strong and keeps on going. The people who attacked him should be more than ashamed.

I know he is not perfect and makes mistakes as we all do but this man is a real hero to many people in New Albany. A humble, gentle, prince of a man.

He and his wife Anna would be the first people I would turn to if I had a need.

A son, husband, brother, father, grandfather, and my friend.
