NO HELP FOR THE FLOOD VICTIMS

I am very disappointed after last night's council meeting. The first item on the agenda was the resolution for the $400,000 to help the flood victims of last August. Jason Hublar and his wife Crystal told of how not only their possessions but the school supplies they purchased for their students were lost. Not only that but they had to take out a loan to cover their loss.

My own brother-in-law and sister-in-law also will be forced to borrow to pay for the repairs to their furnace. I had assured them that the city would take care of them and secured the forms for them to complete and send to Shane Gibson. I have not talked to them yet but they subscribe to the Tribune so they will find out. They are both retired so money is tight, but oh well, that's the way it goes.

I want to thank Shane Gibson, Jeff Gahan, Pat McLaughlin and Dan Coffey for their efforts. These gentlemen spoke about the people who have been devastated by the flood. The rest of the council wanted a long term fix. Mr. Gibson wanted a long term fix also but he knows the people are hurting now. He wanted to reimburse the applicants for their loss and use the rest of the $400,000 for fixing the creeks and ditches. Made sense to me.

Also on the agenda was the request of an appropriation for $2,000,000 to fund the police and fire departments. It was decided to postpone the vote until there was more investigation.

The vacant Trinity Plaza building on the corner of Daisy Lane and Green Valley Rd. will be used as a furniture store for two years. The Planning Commission hopes that by that time a medical facility will replace the furniture store.

And last but not least the $300,000 loan from the Rainy Day Fund to the Storm Water Fund was passed. It was also decided that after three years the Storm Water Fund needs a audit.

Thanks Shirley for the update.

Those citizens who were flooded should and could file a class action lawsuit against the city. The city has been knowing about this for well over two years. They will WIN because it is documented the England administrations has not fixed or abided by the Concent Degree.

$2 mill ion to police and fire is bs in my book.

The bylaws of the stormwater board states and audit to be done in three years.

Let's see how many hands have been in the Citizen's Cookie Jar.

Hi everyone, I know there was a lot of "editorial comment" in my report of last night's meeting. But I never claimed to be inbiased.

I'd have been there, but I was busy sweeping the sidewalk.

Please, no non-German-language comments this time. Insults sound better auf Deutsch.

I am in no way trying to make light of the loss sustained from this freakish weather, however, it would be an excellent time for everyone to look into flood insurance.

Being at a higher elevation does not really protect you from this type of situation.

another call for an audit? gee whiz!

Thanks for the update.

Still can't figure why flooding victiims were not funded.... must be saving the money for additional constuction work to be done down at the bar on bank.

How was Socrates an Iconoclast?

I'm not sure about iconoclast, but that Socrates does a great version of Def Leppard's "Demolition Man."

I tasted mud, I tasted wine
I've kissed the life I've left behind

So say I choose to stick around
I've got news for this here town
I kick the ball, I catch the bus
And raise the roof for all of us

Destination anywhere
So far gone, I'm almost there
Can't you see I can't deny
I'm out of here like I'm on fire

Living like a caged-up animal, criminal
Television newsman so subliminal
Bringing down the walls of wonderland
Just another highbrow cowboy telling me
Everything and everyone and all the things I ought to be
Here I am, your demolition man

It's quite obvious that we should ask a man from Kentuckiana who received his B.A. in Philosophy from Grant Line High in 1982 about Socrates.

If you have been to Europe and you live in New Albany you hear by know more than the bisschen leute of New Albany.

And you know how to make beer that gives you heart burn.

Roger, do you realize you are as narrow minded as Rush? Don't you see that?

Some people just don't want to live like a jack-ass.

Can't you accept that?

The New Albanian said...

Gegähne.

Can't you accept that there is no credibility in anonymity?

RememberCharlemagne said...

I don't follow the Def Leppard comment.

You have made mention of Socrates and Iconoclastism in a recent column but my understanding of the Greek Socrates is not an Iconoclast. My understanding is quite the opposite.

“Yes, Phaedo,” he replied, “and how melancholy, if there be such a thing as truth or certainty or possibility of knowledge, that a man should have lighted upon some argument or other which at first seemed true and then turned out to be false, and instead of blaming himself and his own want of wit, because he is annoyed, should at last be too glad to transfer the blame from himself to arguments in the general: and forever afterwards should hate and revile them, and lose truth and the knowledge of realities.” Socrates

The New Albanian said...

An iconoclast:

1. A breaker or destroyer of images, esp. those set up for religious veneration.

2. A person who attacks cherished beliefs, traditional institutions, etc., as being based on error or superstition.

Surely you recall the pretext for the hemlock?

Note: If I don't answer immediately, it's because I'm headed out of town, not because I'm ignoring you. I'll try to catch up later.

RememberCharlemagne said...

No, the hemlock was a pretext for what?

I know it was the poison that was drunk.
Have fun and be safe.

The New Albanian said...

The pretext for the penalty of drinking hemlock was Socrates' violation of the previaling law, i.e., his habit of corrupting the morals of youth by questioning the foundations of Greek society.

That's firmly iconoclastic.

Thanks for the good wishes.

RememberCharlemagne said...

Yes, he was condemned to death but on false pretenses. Socrates was without blame, not making him an iconoclast.

RememberCharlemagne said...

"How you, O Athenians, have been affected by my accusers, I cannot tell; but I know that they almost made me forget who I was-sopersuasively did they speak; and yet they have hardly uttered a word of truth." Socrates

Then people will see that who I am is irrelevant to the discussions and topics brought before us, and you could no longer resort to anon calling to divert from the main points and critics.

You need anon people.

They are your excuse for everything.

Giggle said...

Does anyone else see the irony in a know-it-all quoting Socrates?

Anonymous said...

"....since insurance states flood damage not city fault then city should not be paying. open doors for future claims".

????? Of course they denied the claims. That's what insurers do. Homes built in city limits flooded due to poor construction oversite, and altered terain that comes from over-development. The City is responsible and should pay. Fema, State ruled local gov't has the funds and it does not need assistance.
Rainy day funds are the tool to provide assistance and improvements to troubled private sites. It appears some council members prefer to extend perks to themselves rather than help tax payers in need. Gonder, Ceasar, Zurschmiede, Messer, Benedetti feather their own nests at the citizen's expense. What a scam.

City Attorney states action will not "open doors" for future claims.

RememberCharlemagne said...

No I don't know it all but thanks for thinking so. And yes I understand if the irony were correct.

When does asking questions and providing your thoughts equate to knowing it all?
Just a rhetorical question

Anonymous said...

why are the flooded homeowners asking for the city to bail them out? any homeowner can get an inexpensive rider to their existing policy that insures against sewer backup. they didn't get the insurance and now they want the taxpayer to pay for their mistake.

Anonymous said...

city is not responsible for those who do not carry adequate and proper insurance.

rainy day fund was not set up to assist individuals who are having a rainy day on their private sites. if so give me some!

Gee Whiz Wally! I didn't know FOS's staff included a pollster. How much independent public opinion research does Professor Erik(a) do? Doesn't that interfer with Erik(a)'s teaching duties? How does (s)he find the time?

Hey FOS, we know you're all about efficincy and saving money, right? And we know that facts aren't that important. Just skip the expensive fake polls and stick to flat out cheap, unscienfitic, dishonest rumor spreading and making stuff up.

It's worked for you so far.

My house was flooded. I didn't get any type of insurance to pay for backed up sewer lines. I'm against high taxes and I'm for self responsibility EXCEPT for when it comes to MY basement being flooded. Instead of expecting me to get insurnace, I want the taxpayer to bail me out.

Anonymous said...

If you live in the west end and your house was flooded, then you can thank your councilman Dan Coffey. Coffey's fought every type of sewer improvement and long term sewer planning brought before the council and the redevelopment commission.

You get what you pay for.

i'll trust the trained accountants of the accounting firm that did the audit. If you think what they reported was slander why don't you file a lawsuit against them. just what did they report that was slanderous and untrue.

now you going to give proof or just insert your foot in your mouth again and look sillly again

Christopher D said...

"You must be thrilled shitless your tax dollars will pay for abortions."

I know I am going to get burned down for posting, but since this is right up my alley, we have received some of that federal funding, and guess what, we are NOT required to provide abortions, nor are we required to provide infomation as to how a person can obtain an abortion.

A Family planning practitioner in the form of womens health, birth control, (pills, shots, implants), and condoms are the main benefits from that, this bill is providing for an expansion of those currently available funds.

Reading FOS's lately slop "REINDEER SPOTTED AT THE BANK STREET BREWHOUSE," I'm still scratching my head. Is this an attempt at humor? It's not funny. I love a good Roger joke if it makes me laugh. A lot of stuff on FOS makes me laugh because it's so ludicrous. But the Reindeer post was just stupid.

Anonymous said...

FOS must have a problem with capitalism. Capitalists believe that if something is priced too high, people won't buy it. Since Bank Street Brewhouse has plenty of customers and is selling kegs like wild in Indy and Louisville, it sounds like it's not priced too high.

Yeah, it costs more than BudLite, but it's better than BudLite, at least for those who buy it.

It's like complaining that a Mercedes costs more than a Yugo. Yes, Yugo's costs less and some people are just about having it cheap but some people prefer quality and value.

What is FOS's obsession with the price of Roger's beer?

The tacos at La Rosita costs more than the tacos at Taco Bell but no one fake Professors are sending anonymous hate mail to La Rosita.

The rocks at Endris costs more than the rocks you get at a local gravel pit. No one on here complains about Caesar's rock prices.

Professor Erik should stop bitching about the free market and let people buy the beer they are willing to pay for.

As seen in Proverbs 14:30 jealousy is compared to such a serious illiness. in James 4:5 states that humankind has a "tendency to envy" - an almost inborn inclination to become jealous of another. What causes this? It is simple - ego.

To live with such a destructive disease must be one of the most terrifying...
