SORRY, I DIDN'T MAKE IT

Unfortunately, I was not able to attend the council meeting last night.

Will anyone who was there please give us the scoop?

thanks,

Short meeting.

Voted to "loan" the storm water board $300k @ 1% interest from the rainy day fund. This is to make the Castlewood retention project start earlier. Discussion concerned loaning the money or just going ahead and directly funding it from the rainy day fund. Vote was unanimous on readings 1 & 2.

A last minute addition to the agenda was $400k for the victims of this years flooding. Shane Gibson(who is also advising the Council for December)stated that the proper advertisement had not been done and this item should not be discussed until the 12-17 meeting.

There was vote to raise fees for the Fairview Cemetery. If I recall correctly, this was the 3rd vote with 8 ayes & 1 nay(Price).

An official with NA baseball league(little league, etc)spoke about the desire to move from Mt. Tabor to 60 acres behind Home Depot, Tuckers, etc. They have met with the county commissioners and will meet with county council tonight.

No fancy reporting from me, obviously. That's the basics and I withheld my commentary.

Happy Birthday Freedom Of Speech. That was one hell of a posting today.

FOS is far from being "mean spirited" compared to things written on this blog.

Anonymous said...

Why loan money to the stormwater, when that is what the Rainyday Fund is for?

So are you telling me that Shane Ginson is sitting on as council attorney for free?

I seen just the other day when Gibson received $35,000 from the County.

"America elected a hustler from the mean streets of Chicago, via Africa."

kind and clearly racist words from FOS last week.

BTW, she works for the president Stop kissing Mrs. Clinton's ass she won't run for president again until Obama says she can.

Who first championed universal health care?
Who lived in Chicago first and longest?

Christopher D said...

ohhhh... vewy scawey! FOS is hitting the restaurants taking notes on what people are saying and we need to be careful....

Yeah, thats not mean spirited at all, calling people liars, etc...

Anonymous said...

FOS is pretty predictable. The author is hooked up through family ties to one Ms. Sipes, right? Doesn't that explain the leaked Linden medows info? Doesn't that explain the hatred of England, as a sipes run at the mayoral seat has been rumored? It's not about "the little people", it's about politics, just like everything else.

So England isn't a liar hmmm let's see how many lies he's told so far since being in office again.

1. He said, the non union people haven't had a raise in several years.

2. He said, that Roger Baylor is a nutcase and I need to shut him up.

3. He said, I'm 65 years old and the mayor and I don't need the council, to approve anything, I will do what I want.

4. 2008 was a hard difficult year, but I put the city in the black.

lies, lies and more lies.

So yes, I say DOS was very wise to call Mayor England a liar.

You rock, FOS, should keep up the great job they are doing!

Mr. Iamhoosier, I read your 9:02 comment and would like to respond. You seem to forget some people in New Albany have real jobs.
Glad you got your nifty crystal ball out, but hey, you were wrong again.

To Daniel S. as far as the newspaper winning awards, good for you. I say this. When you and your management starts printing the truth of the goings on in New Albany I will renew my subscription.

You print everything as gospel, that comes out of Doug's mouth. At least the C/J does do Investigative reporting.

Why don't you?

Anonymous said...

And what exactly constitutes a "real job"? If a person makes slightly above the median income, are they no longer a little person?
Are the little people only considered those with meaningless low wage jobs? If so is that not rather insulting, as if they need someone to speak for them?
On the tribune, because they do not print the same invective dicourse, are they then to be considered less viable, based on the opinion of a minority of political inactivists?

Daniel S said...

what have we printed that wasn't true? Also, what investigative stories has the cj done in floyd in the past year? Heck, I haven't even seen a new Albany hard news story beyond crime in the cj in a month.

Oh, I last plenty... Especially after working all the time, in 4 clinics actually making a difference in the daily lives of "the little people" as you would call them.

heres some facts for you to chew on:

*over 6000 uninsured/underinsured patient encounters taken care in jeff this fiscal year thus far

*3500 at floyd

*2750 at Harrison

*1500 at Ctown

* awarded federally qualified health center status at floyd as of 12-1-09 which will allow for an axpansion of services to those patients and the creation of several good paying, stable jobs

* completion of a state of the art patient education center for diabetes, nutrition, and financial education and counseling

* $99,560.00 per month average in medications to those patients who only have to pay $5 for 3 months worth of prescriptions.

* 8 long term service contracts with locally owned and operated business resulting in more job stability and money being put into our local economy

* over $150k worth of short term contracts with locally owned and operated business (again money staying in our local economy

* providing all that patient care to uninsured/underinsured patients at less than $120 per patient visit overhead. (Medical, dental, vision, and medication)

* Implantation of a comprehensive family planning program (no abortions before you go nutziod on me)

* networking with other non-profit care related foundations to ensure that we can work together to provided the highest level of physical, spiritual, and emotional care to those who are less fortunate.

Outside of "work"

* Hundreds of hours of volunteer time to "nature" issues, species counts, verification of endangered and threatened species

* donated hundreds of nearly world class photographs of interesting and rare species of flora and fauna to educational foundations, educational publications, non-profit nature based companies.

* repainted and repaired a home for person who could not afford to have the work done, and was not capable of doing it themselves.

And still manage to find time for my beautiful wife and daughter, and go to my daughters performances, practices, and help with her homework.

Sometimes it takes more than writing letters to editors and grandstanding with pre-written scripts at public meetings to make a positive impact on the lives of people, and it takes more than griping about taxes and fees to be committed to bettering the lives of people, and contributing to the local economy.

As far as Hillary passing universal health care: when she was in NA (at the Southside) in 2008 she said she wanted legislation that would ensure that everyone in America had the same "Cadillac" insurance as Congress has.

If she would make universal health care happen I would be happy and so would Chris. The clinics would still be in operation.

Actually, I dont feel I "run" anything, I am part of a team of people who makes this happen.

When I was volunteering for the city as an Auxiliary Officer for nearly a decade, that was outside of my normal work and school.

As far as the Health Centers, My job duties are day to day operations of the centers, to do what needs to be done to keep the doors open, and the centers running efficiently and smoothly, and again I do not do it all myself.
We all work together as a team, from the CEO, the CFO, and me the COO, as well as the Medical Director, down to a volunteer who works 2 hours per week, a team, and no one is more important around here than anyone else, in my humble opinion. we are here for one reason and one reason only, patient care. Everything we do is done for just that, Patient Care.

As far as my "medical opinions" they are just that opinions, I do not claim to be, nor have a ever represented myself as being a medical doctor.

Once, many many moons ago, I was an NR-EMT A (advanced), QMA, and a few other initials.

The Auxiliary comes in to play in my work now by learning the values of team work, time management, emergency planning and reaction, facility security, and that all people are basically good people who may just be having a bad time in their life.

And lastly, bird watching, fun, not really, sitting in a cold wet depression in the middle of the woods for hours on end to get one photo of a feathered little chirp box can be boring as all hell!

Learning and watching the amazing diversity of nature we have here in our region, is very enlightening, each relies on the other in someway, and everything from the dung beetle all the way up to our local Apex preditor (the Bald Eagle) in some way or another are interconnected, and where we fit in to that, and our responsibility to be good stewards of the natural beauty that surrounds is rewarding.

But there is probably nothing more "rewarding" than to gain the trust of a little bird you can not communicate with enough to have him land on your shoulder or on your hand after spending weeks and months with them...

Mark, just because someone posts as an anon doesn’t mean they speak for all anonymous people. If one individual calls themselves a progressive does that person assume all responsibility for progressives or when someone considers themselves to be a Christian do they speak for all Christians? No.

Good one GC...

Actually, there is a point to be had here.

To TRULY be a positive advocacy for the community you have to be part of an open team, working towards one thing and one thing only, and that is the demographic in which one serves.

If a group is not willing to do such , then simply put, they are not a community advocacy, they are nothing more than a special interest group serving the interests of a few select members of the group.

REMCHAR:
Better location? Community park has large open feilds that could be used, or even claiming eminent domain on one of the failed and empty strip malls that burst forth everywhere in the 80's and now just serve as a hard surface to create more run off.
Do I think we have more important things to worry about outside of another sports complex, most certainly, but if its going to be done, lets not tear down more trees and greenspace, tear down some of the unused, ignored concrete jungle.

Iamhoosier said...

RemChar,
Exactly. I speak for Mark, who is generally a progressive. Roger speaks for Roger, who is a progressive. Jeff speaks...

That's the difference. We all may be "members" of certain groups, but we still speak and identify as individuals. If you are not willing to be an individual, well...

RemChar, when you get down to it, this anonymity thing is about honor and accountability. Your theory of "policy debate" has a bit of merit but how much policy do you really see discussed? The person who works for the city, may have a concern, but then only on city issues. When Chris's late father is brought into the discussion, when I'm lied about, when someone calls the President a half breed, when private citizens are attacked--where is the honor and accountability?

Why does ACCOUNTABILITY just go one way with some people?

RememberCharlemagne said...

Thanks Chris,Mark

An open team is not one person who believes only their ideas and opinions are the right and best ones. That is TRULY just a self-absorbed person who is working towards one thing and one thing only, and that is an advocacy to serve only for his own insecure ego.

Sounds like this poor guy needs some accolades.

Good Job! Wonderful! You're so Smart! Go Christopher D!

I don't think Chris Drake was asking for "atta boy's" or accolades I think he was answering a question as to what he does all day.

A lot of us are very busy and involved with so many things we feel like we are trying to juggle 15 things a one time. And I think Chris is doing just that.

It's easy to get caught up in different projects, just volunteer for one organization and you will get plenty of invitations and/or requests for your time and talent.

* I dont ask for anything in return for the work I do

* I work ONLY to serve thousands of medically disadvantaged people in our community

* As far as working with me, I work FOR my staff and my clients, and have an extremely low turn over rate.

* Most important aspect is me and my "self-absorbed person" self is this:

I would not turn you away if you needed help, despite how nasty you can be on here, and I would bend over backwards for you and your family to ensure they got the care they needed. I would not hide behind masks, or dog you out behind your back or anonymously on a forum.

I would treat you with respect, courtesy, and dignity from the moment you walked through our doors.

I had read where the little league officials had went to the county council asking for $6m from the local government to build this sports complex.

This during a time when we have such budget problems in both the city and the county?

I understand there is a need for area like this, but in this economic climate in the City/County Building, why is this even being entertained?

Also with work wrapping up today on 15th street, how many weeks will it stay fixed this time?

(By the way, the expected 5 page rebuttal, sorry to disappoint, but it’s not worth it)

Why not entertain the idea of a little league sports center now instead of later? If you don't plan now for the future you end up staying in the past. Economic times are tough, but local governments are often in a better situation to assist in making these visions become a reality. Governments are able to obtain grants, low interest loans, and other financing options that are more favorable than those available to the private sector. This is not something that is going to happen overnight.

The YMCA started out as just a vision. From that vision a plan was developed and finally years later it became a reality. Many people were against the idea of a YMCA because of the cost. Thankfully there were those people who believed it could be achieved and did not stop until the goal was reached.

Excellent points and well put. The comparison with the Y is spot on.

What are your thoughts on the location? Considering State Street in that area is 4 lanes of bumper to bumper most mornings, afternoons and evening, do you think $4m will be enough for infrastructure improvement to that area to correct that with the added traffic during ball season?
