CITY COUNCIL MEETING 5/20/10

There was a lengthy but orderly meeting last night.

Carl Malysz started things off by representing the Mayor regarding the Greenway Project. There will be Federal matching funds if the city can provide approx. $1,225,000. It just so happens that there are funds left over from Phase 1 of the Scribner Project so it looks like we will have a walkway that extends past Loop Island and goes to Silver Creek.

Ed Wilkinson reported on the Sewer Board. He gave out reports to the council members showing the cash on hand in addition to the receipts and expenditures. He said the report was pretty straight forward since he is not a CPA. He added that the sewer liens are being paid but he does not have an exact amount now because the funds are being deposited in the bank. He promised more information later.

Although there were several Ordinances and Resolutions the rest of the meeting went smoothly for the most part. All members were present except for Mr. Caesar.

Good reporting Shirley

I have some questions with the way Carl stated that there is left over funds from Phase 1

It sounds to me what Carl is saying is that they can bond out more debt to come up with the money.

Essentially borrowing to pay for the project from the YMCA original bond package.

I don’t know but I wonder if that is why the YMCA asked to refi their debt so that New Albany can borrow more. I asked Kay while she was sitting next to me but she only said New Albany is not on the hook for any of the bonds.

Carl is very good at manipulating funds to come up with money for projects.

If this is true I would like to have seen more figures explaining the situation.

Transfer station is not just for the use of the 3rd district and is necessary since the city no longer handles trash removal. With out the transfer station the private company would be charging the city more since they would have to be making more trips to the landfill. The transfer station is keeping costs down. Are you saying you would rather pay even more per month to have your garbage removed?

I CAN'T WAIT TO MEET PROFESSOR ERIK AT THE DEBATE!

Anything to keep new albany clean or get it cleaner is fine with me. I say more transfer stations so others can dump their crap there instead of in the alleys. We already know the street department can't keep the city's alleys clean.

Price is for anything to clean up New Albany.

Anything except Street Sweepers, sidewalks, public works, filling pitholes, parks, code enforcements, or anything else except transfer stations for landlords.

why buy another street sweeper. the new one we just got spewed oil slime all out in front of christopher D's house recently and royally pissed him off. those things dont work anyways. the road is worse after they come through than before. just another expensive reason to keep someone else on the payroll. it is a waste of money.

Annoymous
Dear Mr. Thompson,

Recently a resident of our community felt the need to publicly criticize your department for what he characterized as a yellow street sweeper spewing oil on the public road in front of his house. As you are aware, this citizen went as far as posting pictures on the internet of a road with oil spots which he claims was created by your employees while operating the street sweeper in front of his house. It is unfortunate that there are citizens in our community who will go as far as posting pictures of oil spots on the road in order to try and incite public outcry and controversy. This was a simple maintenance issue that was quickly identified and corrected by your dedicated and skilled employees. It certainly did not warrant the negative comments or pictures that this citizen publicly posted on the internet .

One can tell by the drastic change in his tone between his internet criticism and his email to you that his true motives were to attempt to portray the street department in a negative light to the public. Your email response to him extending an offer to come out and re-clean the road in front of his house demonstrates the professionalism in which your department operates. It is disheartening to see that even after this citizen made his public criticism on the internet and you tried to appease him, he had the audacity to tell you that it was not necessary for you to come out at take care of it because he cleans the road and sidewalks in front of his house himself.

With the limited man power and resources in which your department operates, it shameful that a citizen feels that he can rightfully take valuable time away from your day in order to fulfill his desire to try and stir up controversy in this city. We want to let you and your staff know that we appreciate the professionalism, dedication, and hard work performed by you and your employees.

Keep up the good work!

still no reply from Christopher D.

again are you trying to say that you feel the city should pay health insurance for life on union members and their spouses? if so why aren't you pushing for the same benefits for nonunion city workers then?

I believe the Little Chef is very good at what it chooses to be, which is all that really matters. It's true that what Little Chef chooses to be isn't my preference, just as Bank Street Brewhouse isn't favored by anonymous folks herein. So be it. May Little Chef live long(er) and prosper.
