LET'S DEBATE

I just talked to Councilman Steve Price concerning his reply to Matt Nash's article in the "Tribune" last week.

Since he has replied via a letter to the Editor we decided that posting the reply on this blog would be redundant. So he asked me to post this instead:

He wants to set up a debate, he will choose two people and is asking Roger Baylor or Randy Smith to also choose two people in addition to the moderator.

Anyone who wants to participate is asked to reply by comment on this blog or contact Mr. Price. The time, place and names of participants will be disclosed as soon as I know.

Sounds interesting.

Who is Price debating? Matt Nash or Roger and Randy?

That's the dumbest thing I have ever heard!

Come on people. I read complaints all of the time about Mr. Price. Here is your chance to discuss the issues with him personally.

Mr. Baylor, I'm surprised at your comment.

Anonymous said...

To discuss the issues with him personally is not a debate.

A debate is where a topic is picked and "experts" from both sides are represented. A moderator is there to select the non-biased questions and present them to debaters. Then they have an intellectual conversation on both sides of the topic.

I have a feeling that Steve Price just wants to have a sit down and hear me meeting. There is nothing wrong with him wanting to have a meeting with the people that doubt his abilities as a city councilman but don't call it a debate unless an actual debate will be held.

And why does he want to have it with Baylor or Smith? Why not Nash who called him out?

I've been all over the Tribune's website looking for CM Price's letter to the editor, but was un successful. Perhaps posing it on this site is a good idea.

Anonymous said...

They probably haven't published it yet. It is on FOS.

Anonymous said...

Baird, talking to Steve Price is not going to help you get elected.

Eric Moore said...

So, if I'm reading his letter correctly, Councilman Price thinks we should micromanage the sewer utility. Wouldn't receiving monthly financial updates be a cornerstone of micromanagement? What, exactly, are his ideas for oversight if they don't include financials?

The New Albanian said...

I didn't say no, Shirley. If he wants to discuss the notion of a serious debate about issues, not mugging for the crowd and inciting vandalism, I'm for it. Like you, I await details.

The event is to be sponsored by Ringling Bros./Barnum and Baileys.
CIA will be in attendance with members of CFA to interrogate anyone who voted for England.
Handicapped accessibility will not be provided as it turns out ADA has been a scam of Mayor Englands from the very start.
Anyone presenting questions that are above the comprehension level of a stoned three year old will be subsequently removed by the police, which price and CFA do not support, but paid off to attend the meeting in free "no" signs and a free one week stay at their choice of Price Properties fabulous villa's.
Some restrictions apply, not valid with any other offer. Price subject to change. This product has been shown in the state of California to cause nausea, elevated blood pressure, severe uncontrollable laughter, and a sense of civic shame.

Shirley, I don't know if that letter is really from Price. Did you talk to Price personally? If he wants a debate, great! I just want to see that this is coming from him.

I called Mr. Price this morning and we discussed his letter in response to Mr. Nash.

Yes, he is serious about a debate.

Anonymous said...

And thus, 2:26, why the local establishment is a joke. YOU make it so, congrats! Hope you have a ring side seat.

Enough trash talk, let's have a debate!

When and where?

What are the rules?

Mr. Nash didn't write the column, I did.

As far as the reason I voted "NO" on the YMCA, it was due to how it was finance and also them using citizen's property taxes to backup the loan, which you failed to mention.

Steve, if you had to do it again, would you still vote the same way on the YMCA?

I propose Nash v. Price next week then Baylor v. Coffey the following week.

Mr. Nash, what a dumb question. You must have not read his letter.

FOS:

"Will the Tribune Have "The Guts" to Print This Letter"?

Funny how FOS always tries to imply bias by the Tribune. The Tribune has always taken Ms. Denhart at her word that she is the President of an organization called "Citizens for Accountability." Never has a Tribune reporter asked to see some credentials, attend a meeting, meet the professor, etc. CFA should be thankful it has avoided the attention. If they were in "England's pocket" it would be easy for the Tribune to pick "CFA" apart.

Also, the Tribune has published every letter to the editor from Ms. Denhart and Mr. Coffey. They also run a weekly column by Rep. Clere.

Let's face it, the Tribune is not one-sided.

So you want a debate? What is the topic?

A master plan for the City of New Albany? A parking garage? The Coyle building? City Councilmen and their short comings? The Tribunes bias? How to control the sewer board? What should trash pickup cost?

9:50 FYI she submitted her PAC papers when she delivered her first submission to the Tribune. She has her credentials and your just spouting off your so called worthless claims.

Do you have your green card on you?

Anonymous said...

Per the 2000 census New Albany has 1.36% Hispanic population. If you would like to double that seeing as its been 10 years, that is still only 2.63% of the population that you would stereotype as needing a green card.

The people that read this blog on a regular bases is maybe 100 people. A couple of people, with muliple personalities we can add them also. Based on the chances I would assume they have a green card.

Anonymous said...

***Sorry, assume they dont need a green card.

Anonymous said...

9:34, anyone can file some papers. that doesn't mean they have members, staff, office, funding, newsletters, web addressed, meetings, influence.

the tribune could destroy ms. denhart and call her out as a nobody if they wanted. they haven't.

there's no bias at the tribune. they print whatever you send them. price is welcome to send them as much scribble as he wants.

Anonymous said...

as Hispanics the only immigrants in new albany? no! shows typical stereotyping by anonymous professors.

Anonymous said...

I guess the Trib has "The Guts."

Will Professor have "The Guts" to show his face?

Will CFA have "The Guts" to allow people to a meeting?

Will CFA staff have "The Guts" to show they exists?

Will Price have "The Guts" to actually show up to a debate?

Anonymous said...

CFA probably wants green cards for people that live outside New Albany city limits.

Anonymous said...

FINANCES should be the number one topic.

Anonymous said...

Mr. Nash doesn't even need an unbiased moderator. He agrees to let Professor Erik moderate.

Christopher D said...

I am glad Mr. Price wrote the letter to the paper, hell, if nothing else he is being public about his opinions.

But it does raise some questions with me.

1. The question he asked regarding why citizens should have to pay for lack of leadership; I find that interesting coming from a multiple term councilman who is supposed to be a leader

2. In regards to our sewer bills all ready being some of the highest in the state, previously I had posted information regarding average sewer bills for similar sized cities in Indiana, based on a three person household, using 4,500 gallons of water per month. Along with the rates residents in Seymour, Columbus, Bloomington, and Evansville pays.

I also posted information regarding who to contact in those cities to verify the totals I posted, and even if the originally proposed rate increase passed, we would have been paying less than three of those cities, and only slightly more than one of them.

Where did the figures come from for the statement that we pay the highest rates in the state as it was before any increases? * Disclaimer, I did not want a rate increase, but sometimes you have to pay fair market value for a commodity.

Lastly, I would like to ask WHY Mr. Price, pre-published a letter to the editor to FOS, which has proven in its previous posts to have racial views, discriminatory views, and are anti-police, anti-fire, and generally anti-council, anti-government, anti-human rights, hell just anti. If we were to call Mr. Price, could he verify that he spoke with the good professor to have the letter pre-published?

Again, I am actually glad that he sent the letter in, but for me it raised more questions than answers.

Anonymous said...

I agree to moderate the debate next Thursday at C.F.A. headquarters.

Please call my assistant with any questions.

Sincerely,
Professor Erik

Anonymous said...

Christopher D... Interesting all you can say is that it raises more questions for you. The guy has made some good points that do have some merit. No acknowledgment of any favorable points made by him from you. Does this mean that you do not agree with anything he said? Not saying I totally agree with everything but I am able to say he made some good points.

This is a time where we can see if certain folks are actually willing to listen and try to look at things in a different perspective than just their own. The constant belittling and name calling directed at him is childish. Isn't it ironic that this is mostly coming from those claiming to be progressive. Haven't quite figured out how that is considered progressive. Sounds more like regressive tactics to me.

And lord knows we have regressive in New Albany who like to call people names. Right Denhart, or is "Fascist" and "Jihadist" not name calling?

Christopher D said...

1. I never claimed, labeled or accepted the label as a "progressive", that is something that was pasted to me on this blog.
(not that I feel that wanting progress is something negative)

2. I had questions so I asked them, does that make me a bad person? (but then again I was labeled as a trouble maker when I posted the information regarding sewage rates from similar sized cities in our region of the state)

3. I acknowledged that I was glad he wrote the letter.

4. Lastly, a person gain be a "good listener" and gain nothing if they have unanswered questions regarding the subject at hand. I would rather seek the answers to questions that I have and be considered "childish' and "regressive" by a couple of people, and be able to make an informed decision on where I stand on the subject matter, than to blindly lean one way or another and immediately agree or disagree in order to neatly fit in to these all important neatly arranged labeled corals.

Anonymous said...

Does this mean that you do not agree with anything he said?

Christopher D said...

This means I have not formed an opinion yet, as I have questions left unanswered. To reach an informed decision those questions would need to be answered.

So, in short form, I neither agree nor disagree at this point.

Make of that what you will.

Funding for the Police and Fire Departments can be accomplished thru renegotiation of contracts just like FORD, GE, and other companies are doing throughout America.

The current employees now do not change. But, the new ones come in under a different system.

Christopher D. you have no opinion on renegotiation of contracts? This has been instrumental in the survival of many businesses. Do you think this plan is only good enough for Ford, GM, GE, etc and not good enough for New Albany? Do you think the city should have to pay for lifetime health insurance for it's union workers? Do you get that where you work?

Anonymous said...

Brilliant! Think how much money NA will save if we just pay all civil servants minimum wage!

(I just hope the 16 year old responding to the fire read a good book about putting out fires)

Christopher D said...

For the record I do not get insurance through work. No one does. We got dumped by our carrier due to some damn law that unions had pushed through with their PAC's and lobbyists pushing for change for the little people they were protecting.

These are the same people who attacked Councilman Price who are attacking St. Mary's church.
Question: how were they going to put the steeple on without taking the trees out.
I guess Christopher D. has the solution to that one too.

Anonymous said...

Question: how were they going to put the steeple on without taking the trees out.

Geez, they got the steeple down without cutting trees, didn't they?

By the way, we're not attacking St. Mary's. We're attacking England's decision to allow the trees to come down. I figured you'd like England attacks of any and every form.

I propose two debates. One on territory favorable to Nash and one on territory favorable to Price. The first will be held at Destinations Booksellers. The Second will be held at CFA headquarters.

Any questions?

Chris, you mentioned how New Albany compares to other cities with their sewer rates.

At one of the recent meetings Mr. Larry Kockert, if that's how you spell his name, made available a list of rates cities in Indiana pay. It showed New Albany as being second.

Mr. Price had the same information. This information was verbally validated by Mr. Skomp of Ice Miller.

"Yes New Albany has for years been one of the highest rated cities."

With the new rate increase New Albany will continue to stay at the top of the list even as other cities are beginning to be forced by the EPA to make repairs that New Albany made years ago.

I do think a better deal could have been worked out.

What is done is done we have to pay now.

I can just picture tomorrows Tribune headlines: Progressive (tree huggers) verse St Mary's Church.
What you guy's are forgetting those St. Mary's Church people can put you both out of business. (Destinations and the Brewhouse.) On second though, maybe our prayers are being answered.

Anonymous said...

You forget that St. Mary's didn't chop down the trees. Do ahead, try and make an issue out of it. This will be funny. Can I debate your fake controversy with the fake professor?

Anonymous said...

"For the record I do not get insurance through work"

you want answers but are unwilling to provide any thoughts yourself. we all know you have an opionion on everything. why the hesitance in giving your opinion? just another avoidance on your behalf of answering the question or are you trying to say that you do feel the city should pay health insurance for life on union members and their spouses? if so why aren't you pushing for the same benefits for nonunion city workers then?

Anonymous said...

Jameson you are an idiot.

First believe nothing Kochert says, he sat on the sewer board longer than anyone and is the single reason why the infrastructure is in such bad shape. Yes, he helped to keep the rates lower but he accomplished nothing when it comes to maintaining the utility in way that it needed to be.

Second, the reason we have some of the highest rates (barely) is because we have some of the oldest sewer lines in the whole state.

Do some research yourself jackass!

The immaturity you display is typical of too many here in NA.

His information was verbally validated by Mr. Skomp of Ice Miller. So did Mr. Skomp lie also?

Mr. Kohert is not why the infrastructure is so bad. $65 million dollars spent on the oldest sewer lines in the state should have them as some of the newest and best in the state by now.

Price is a landlord and he votes like self-interested landlords vote.

*Property taxes? He owns more property than everyone else so he's affected more than everyone else so 'NO.'

*Sewer fees? He pays sewer fees on far more properties than you or I do so 'NO.'

*Code enforcement? This will only make him work more to keep his pay-by-the-week properties up so 'NO.'

*Economic development, job training, retention of high paying jobs? He already has a job, his tenants are on unemployment and social security so 'NO.'

*Clean streets, walkable sidewalks, parks, YMCAs? His tenants, many if not most of whom are drunks and unemployed don't go to these places, so 'NO.'

*Quality housing for moderate income families? He's in the low rent housing business. Anyone who wants to develop better housing is just competition so 'NO.'

Price profits from renting to the least skilled people who contribute the least to this community. Price will oppose any effort to improve their lives, to train them, to educate them, to find them better jobs, to attract employers for them, or to provide them with better housing alternatives.

He's just voting his self interest even though most in his district are harmed by his voting. I want a councilman who looks out for all his constituents, not just himself.

Just my Two Cents.
