IMPORTANT MEETING TONIGHT

It's going to be an exciting place to be tonight at the City Council meeting. The council will vote on the 1 million allocation from EDIT to pay for the hiring and training of 10 new police officers.

Additionally there will be an appropriation request from CM Gahan of $75,000 to compensate the recent flood victims. Although some people may say this will just open the door for everyone to request funds for future flooding and other problems, I think this is a special circumstance. There is a major problem with our storm water run-off and it needs to be fixed immediately.

Going back to the police officers, I had said in a previous posting that I was unsure how I would vote if I had the opportunity to do so. After careful consideration I would have to vote in the negative. Yes, we certainly need new police officers but at this time we have several highly paid officers who have yet to retire. When they do so, we will have the additional funds to pay for the salary and training of new officers. I know CM Messer sees an immediate need and he is on the "front lines" but we only have so much money and we have to use it wisely.

I too think i am against using that money to hire that many officers, despite how supportive I am of our police.
Adding to the "front lines" is reactionary, and we need to be more preventative at this time.
I do however agree with hiring an additional evidence technician to help catch some of these theives

CM Gahan's repair fund is the biggest can or worms to be opened lately.

Anyone hear about this story in The Corydon Democrat?
Georgetown paves way for bankruptcy -

"But if we're forced into bankruptcy, we won't be able to build our own plant, and we'll be forced to stay with New Albany sewers. That will stop all growth here. Not just in Georgetown, but in the whole township."

So I ask what will New Albany do now?

I agree about the police officers. I fully support our police force, but feel that this is not the best time to be hiring 10 additional officers. Once some of our higher paid officers retire, then it could be considered to hire new law enforcement.

Easy Money, huh?
Merle is a good man, an excellent friend, and one hell of a cop. Merl Harle has earned his salary through merit increases over the DECADES he has been working not only as an officer, but as a shift commander (you know, ultimately responsible for ALL of the officers on his shift)
His decision to not retire is his business and his business alone, his performance as an officer is the business of the Chief, and the Police merit commission, not of some anonymous blogger who feels the need to slap down a good man behind his back.
