MAD AS HELL AND MARCHING

The Mad As Hell Doctors came to Jeffersonville last night and were very inspiring. They spoke from personal experience of seeing patients put off needed medical care until it was too late because of lack of health care. They vowed to keep up the fight for single payer and we all cheered.

The rain stopped just before they arrived and there was a beautiful rainbow which reflected our mood. Maybe the clouds of confusion will disappear and Congress will recognize that 60% of the physicians and the majority of citizens want real health care reform.

I want to thank David Ross Stevens for his hard work in organizing this event. And I want to thank Mayor Galligan for his rousing speech in favor or single payer. Additionally I want to thank everyone who showed up in spite of the rain to walk across the bridge with candles and flashlights, signs, and even a coffin (a person dies every 12 seconds without health care) to show Kentuckiana that we are serious.

Please check out the Courier Journal on line, they have a great article and photo gallery.

Congratulation Shirley, you are NOW classified as a political terrorist. Isn't that what Baron Hill calls anyone who is against ObamaCare?
Sorry to hear your HR 676 is off the table.
Keep fighting the good fight though.

11:43AM, are you going to call Shirley a name, make a crack at Baron Hill, or are you going to talk about healthcare?

Will FOS post a message stating under what circumstances, if any, she ever would support new downtown construction and businesses? Or does FOS oppose all downtown development under all circumstances?

Medical Device Tax:

They were calling it the tax on Q-tips. Amid Republican ridicule, a Democratic chairman backed down Tuesday and exempted consumer items of $100 or less -- from condoms to contact lenses -- from a proposed tax on medical device manufacturers. It would help pay for health care coverage for the uninsured in comprehensive legislation. Senator Baucus, D-Mont., left intact a $4 billion-a-year levy on the medical devices industry -- keeping the controversy alive.

The Mad As Hell docs received a call from the White House asking them to remove their request for phone calls & emails to the White House requesting a meeting with the President.

We need to keep up the calls, emails, letters etc. Tell the President we will stop when he meets with the Mad Doctors.

Impressive that Tom Galligan actually gave a speech as a Democrat, and not a Republican pretending to be a Democraft like the rest of the poseurs in this community.

I wonder when Coffey will remember the name of the EPA rep with which he spoke. I suspect he's on the phone right now trying to find someone, anyone, whose name he can use.

The New Albanian said...

I believe Coffey spoke with the EPA's regional liaison, Mr. Wile E. Coyote.

For obvious reasons, Mr. Coyote isn't answering calls any longer.

Anonymous said...

He was a Criminal Investigator sent from EPA from the 5th District.

You guys don't know nothing, do you?

The New Albanian said...

Ah knows -- ah done saw him. Heeze th' one in that sooo-er submreen.

Ya know -

"We all live in the sewer submarine
The sewer submarine

We all live in the sewer submarine
The sewer submarine
The sewer submarine
And the little people are all aboard
Many more of them hide next door
And Erika begins to "nay"

"You guys don't know nothing, do you?"

Apparently neither does Coffey who, if this were true, could have said as much.

Sure he was from EPA and not FBI or CIA?

Much more importantly, what the hell does a criminal investigator have to do with obtaining grant funding?

I bet its one of them thar fancy talkin big city folk from up DC way who just love to come in our lil town an tern everthing heel side up just so he's can get some giggles out ah proddin us backards country folk.
ifs thay wuld haf let us keep tem out houses, and an gravelly roads and pole barns fer our council meetins, none of this messes wuld ever happened upon us.
But that thar Dan Coffey (likes the drink only spellin is differnt)
he has the book lernins to sniff these cit slickers out and run out ah town on a log like in the good ol days!

Anonymous said...

Was Coffey talking to the EPA criminal folks because he's being investigated?

If they cut our city budget, it's because we're all paying less in property taxes. No free lunch. What was paid for my property owners will now be paid by wage earners. It's regressive but it's the law. It's also time to talk about a LOIT again.

Anonymous said...

When he screamed and whined about property taxes and won, the amount we paid for public school increased by more than double the amount we are going to save in property taxes. Thanks Valley Anne Bologna

"the amount we paid for public school increased by more than double the amount we are going to save in property taxes."

double? hardly!

show me the math.

Iamhoosier said...

I'd like to see that math, too.

Anonymous may have a point. But for me to know that for sure, I'd also need to see the numbers.

good article. but those weren't the numbers were were asking for.

we were asking on the property tax savings versus school closing savings.

Anonymous said...

still waiting for those numbers.

still waiting to see the tapes.

still waiting for Erik to debate Roger.

Anonymous said...

There's at least two problems with people like "Professor Erik."

1. They don't know basic math. They say "cut, cut, cut" but can't tell us where to cut from or what the results would be.

2. They didn't get to see the soup line they'd be waiting in bad the federal government not pumped money into the economy to ward of a second great depression. They see the deficits. They can't see the train wreck that would have happened without them.

Anonymous said...

Your entitled to your opinion, but that's all it is.

An opinion.

still waiting for those numbers. and that's a FACT.

still waiting to see the tapes. and that's a FACT too.

Let's see the Denhart/Price plan for a $10,000,000 budget. You can cut bike lanes, cut council health insurance (which I recommend), but sidewalk paving, cut street paving, cut he deputy mayor's position, and cut the mayor's pay in half and take back his car.

WHERE DOES THAT GET YOU?

That at most saves $200,000 per year. That WILL NOT save you $4,800,000.

How about we also cut all council salaries, cut a new city-county building, we cut new greenway improvements, and we don't mow any more grass. Maybe that saves another $150,000?

Do Denhart and Price recommend cutting half of all police and half of all fire? That STILL won't do it. A good chunk of the police and fire budgets go to equipment, buildings, vehicles. It's not just for salaries.

To cut out $4,800,000, you'll have to cut everything mentioned above PLUS more than half of the police and fire.

Is that what Denhart and Price want?

IF YOU HAVE THE ANSWERS, SHOW US YOUR PLAN.

Christopher D said...

Nothing will probably make them happier than to see those cuts.
We can lay off a bunch of city workers, but FOS and CFA will be happy.
But the second that the decreased services effect the FOS'ers and CFA'ers, they will be screaming to high heaven how they were targeted.

Everytime we have had the chance to do something to raise some more funds they ahev rallied and screamed and cried.

Congratulations guys, you got what you wanted, now this is what you get.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like to me your blaming Denhart and Price. I guess those two deserve an apology from some bloggers here. They have both been right all along.

Anonymous said...

The decision to make the necessary cuts was made by the State of Indiana DLGF. Not the locals.

Why have the local officials been so quiet? Has anyone asked the Mayor or Council Members to show us a report on 2008 spending?

Did the current administration over
spend in 2008?

Where can we go to get this information?

Anonymous said...

Who will be counting nickels and dimes now?

Thanks Price, they should have voted NO.

To funny, they have finally nailed England.

Drinks on me at Steinert's @ 4pm for all the little people of New Albany.

They told you sooooooooooo!

Anonymous said...

I AGREE WITH THE COMMENT ABOVE. WE HAVE NOT BEEN GIVEN FINANCIAL INFORMATION.

WHAT ABOUT A REPORT ON THE 2009 SPENDING ?

Christopher D said...

I am saying that the anonymous hordes who have thrown fits everytime the reality hits that we need to raise more revenue to even maintain the current service levels, which in and of itself is not keeping up with the pace as it is, the ones who have screamed that they will not stand for a $5 a month increase, can take a brunt of the blame for this.
Would it have solved the problem, no. Had we been able to raise more revenues, would the budgetary deficit be as bad, no it would not have.

So all of the grandstanding over each household paying a few extra dollars per month for needed services HAS led to some of this shortfall.

If I am wrong, then please by all means prove me wrong.

The money has to come from somewhere, and that somewhere is the taxpayers.

They dont want to have to pay for anything, and the sad part is, the ones with the "no" signs seem to me to live in some of the nicest houses in the city, or are the ones who could afford a few dollars more the most. (witht the exception of the slumlords who have put the signs on their rental properties)

I will apologize to them if this offends them when Denhart appologizes to Me, Baylor, and everyone else whe has and her cronies have slandered on here, in the papers, at the council meetings, etc.

(please take note how I my name is attached to this, why dont you try the same)

Anonymous said...

If there was overspending, it certainly wasn't by $4.8 million all in 2008 and 2009. Get your facts straight.

Anonymous said...

It is a valid point made. The powers that be have made it known that they can not continue to operate as is with out increased funding.
VD fought every increase in funding.
Your city would have still had to make cuts. But perhaps by a million or so less.
Facts are facts, and this is one of them.

Anonymous said...

"The decision to make the necessary cuts was made by the State of Indiana DLGF. Not the locals."

No one in Indianapolis cares what the New ALbany budget is.

Indianapolis is giving us less money, but nowhere did they saw we cannot maintain current budget levels through a tax increase or other means of generating revenue.

The state says, each county should live on a budget each council passes, not spend like drunken sailors.

Anonymous said...

"The state says, each county should live on a budget each council passes, not spend like drunken sailors."

Fine. Then let's increase sewer $30/month so our budget will match our spending. I have no problem with that.

DON'T CUT MY SERVICES.

Anyone else?

Sewer funds are user fees and are NOT a part of the General Fund monies. They must be kept separated.

I guess what we have here is a case of champagne tastes (spending) with only a beer pocketbook! Are these elected officials bonded?

Iamhoosier said...

Not all sewer funds are user fees. A substantial amount of EDIT funds go into the sewers.

Anonymous said...

11;09 Yes, they are bonded.

Anonymous said...

i'm still waiting to see FOS's proposed budget.

maybe there's a reason she doesn't want us to see it.

Anonymous said...

Yes, some EDIT money was pledged for sewer bonds. If that sewer work had not been done, there would have been NO sewer credits given to the city. NO credits means NO development added to the sewer lines. New Albany is on a Sewer Ban.

Iamhoosier said...

Sewer rate could(and should)have been raised to support those bonds. No courage on the Council to do it.

Sorry, Mr. K, your argument just won't fly.

Anonymous said...

Look for sewer rates to double (no EDIT this time) and no discount rates for commercial and industrial users.
