I thought about making the usual New Year's Resolutions but decided to list New Year wishes instead. They are listed in no particular order. Just wishful thinking.

  1. For everyone to have health care, not the expensive kind with high deductibles, but the kind that pays for everything, like all of the other civilized countries have.
  2. For everyone who needs a job to find a good one. A job with a living wage and good benefits.
  3. For everyone to have a clean, safe home which they can afford.
  4. For New Albany to have working sewers and stormwater drains.
  5. For New Albany to repair all of it's unsafe and dilapidated homes.
  6. To have the Greenway project finished so everyone can walk along the riverbank safely.
  7. For the K & I Bridge to be opened for pedestrians.
  8. For the continuation of the revitalization of New Albany's downtown, including the Main St. Master Plan.
  9. To end the war in Afghanistan and bring our troops home.
  10. For people to quit trying to take "In God We Trust" off of our currency.

I want all fifteen checking accounts audited in the Controllers office.

I want the England's administration to pay back $5.3 million to sewers.

I want EDIT to pay back $3.2 million they owe TIF.

I want Dan Coffey to stop cutting deals

I want the Tribune to stop printing that Malysz is Deputy Mayor when he's never been approved by our city council.

I want Keith Henderson to stop saying everything is to political and start prosecuting these elected officials.

I want Garry to stop covering up what is owed and cash on hand and the Board of Works to stop appproving claims.

I want England to stop saying city employees have not gotten a raise in over 2 years.

I want all three council members who receives insurance to pay their own.

I want the departments and elected officials who have take home cars and cell phone to keep records as required by Indiana State law.

I want our city clerk to update minutes for Council, Board of Works and Sewer Board meetings.

I want all councilmembers to be able to read and understand what they are voting on, instead of cutting deals before they attend meetings.

I want every homeowner to pay the right amount of taxes, with out political pull, and having them reduced.

And most of all I want world peace.

Great job anonymous. I will add to your list:

I want NO tax abatements given for two years.

I want Mayor Engand and others to take a 10% cut in pay.

I want Mayot England to lead by example and place all contracts on line.

If he has nothing to hide he can put everything on line and out for citizens too see.

Anonymous said...

THE MAYOR SHOULD GIVE UP HIS 16% RAISE. THE MAYOR HAS NO QUALIFICATIONS TO RUN FOR REELECTIONS. WHAT HAS HE DONE? BUT ROB PETER TO PAY PAUL.
STATE RECEIVERSHIP IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER.

Anonymous said...

I think all salaries should be cut 15%. If the clerk makes less with cuts then cut her staff or lower there wages. Mayors staff should be 15% below his and so on down the food chain. If we are going to cut then lets cut all salaries throughout the city.
Then renogiate the police and fire contracts.

Clarksville laying off

3. Council says no to flooding, police funding request

2. EPA looking into complaints in New Albany again

As usual, it looked like Erika wants it both ways.

She rants and raves, foaming at the mouth if there's any hint of a tax increase.

Then she whine and moans when there's not enough money to fix sewers or pay for police.

In 2008 most of the streets in NA were busted, pothole filled mazes;2009 saw those repaved:
not good enough for some.
In 2008 our riverfront sat idle, wasting away;2009 saw a rebirth of the riverfront, festivals and concerts:
still not good enough for some.
In 2009 most cities across the country had to massively cut back services, jobs, and community programs;NA didnt have to:
still not good enough for some people.
in 2009 all across the country countless small businesses shut down; NA bucked that trend and had business open:
Still not good enough for some people.
in 2009 mother nature kicked the countrys ass, a lot of people dead, communities wiped out, a lot of people lost everything; In NA we had flooding, but no one died, and no one lost everything, adn the city responded the best they could:
still not good enough for some people.
Me thinks there be a pattern here. With all we have to be grateful and thankful for, there are still those who feel the need to complain. Hopefully the new year will bring a little reality to those who are always negative and make them see how lucky we actually are. but unfortunately we know that no matter what good happens, its still not going to be good enough for some sad little people.

For me, New Albany is where I was born, it where I left and moved back to, it where I have buried family, and started a new family.

Its where my friends and I grew up, went to school, its where no matter where in the world I go, I always come back to, its my home.

New Albany is a place that pisses me off for its short sightedness, but comforts me for its ability to keep some of its history alive.

New Albany is close to big cities with out the big city crime, it is close to some of the best wilderness left in the country, but still able to "city" stuff.

The way I see it, New Albany is what the individual makes of it. Some of us see untapped potential, while others see a stagnant dead end town.

Some of us see it for what it really is, a typical small midwest city with a rich history, good cultural diversity, and good opportunities waiting to be mined from the rough.

Unfortunately, the people we hear the most are the ones who only want to raise holy hell about what they see is wrong with it, and never really offering any solutions.

After all, this is not the "little peoples" city, nor is it the "progressives" city, it does not belong to the politicians, or the "good old boys", New Albany IS the "little people", the "progressives", the conservatives, and politicians, and the good old boys.

WE, together, are New Albany, and a relection of who we are collectively.

Anonymous said...

yep, those from here generally dont have a problem with it. It is how they were raised and what they are use to.

Christopher D said...

"yep, those from here generally dont have a problem with it. It is how they were raised and what they are use to."

It comes down to what Gandhi said:

"You must be the change you wish to see in the world"

Problem is, me included, we want change, but are not too willing to do what is really takes to create those changes. It takes more than talk and speeches at public meetings, it takes rolling up your sleeves, putting on the gloves, DOING, not saying.

(please note, I have included myself in this catagory as of late)

Anonymous said...

If you just want to whine about New Albany, move!

Anonymous said...

"New Albany is close to big cities with out the big city crime"

Thats is not at all what our police department says! Talk to our police and they will tell you for a town our size the crime rate is out of control.

"The way I see it, New Albany is what the individual makes of it. Some of us see untapped potential, while others see a stagnant dead end town"

New Albany is what SOME Individuals have made it. Most who moved here saw the potentional but have concluded after many years it is a dead end town!

"Unfortunately, the people we hear the most are the ones who only want to raise holy hell about what they see is wrong with it, and never really offering any solutions"

Unfortunately, for many people who like use make this comment they are really the ones unwilling to listen and consider the solutions offered by other. They would rather bash others for their ideas and solutions then to

Again...if you want to tell us to move, BUY our houses and we will move.

Anonymous said...

Maybe a total of 15 people comment on here. I'm not going to judge 37,000 New Albanians by the comments of an angry and hateful few.

Anonymous said...

it is probably those 15 people who should move. happy new years.

Christopher D said...

"Unfortunately, for many people who like use make this comment they are really the ones unwilling to listen and consider the solutions offered by other. They would rather bash others for their ideas and solutions then to "

By all means, if I have erred in that statement, please show me some of the solutions offered, demanding certain politicians step down is not offering a solution, demanding publishing of reports available under open records acts is not offering a solution.

That is just talk, not action. PIcking up a paint brush to help some one tidy up a run down house is action, planting a tree or neighborhood garden is action, implementing a neighborhood watch program is action, as well as taking a garbage bag and cleaing up litter in your block.

Even the most hated elected officials are in essence DOING more than most of us, same can be said for the police officers and fire fighters, they are taking action to bring their vision of a better coty to light.

This is not intended to be an argumentative point. it is to point out if we want change, we have to MAKE change, not just sit back and demand that some one bail us out by buying our houses so we can go somewhere else and start griping about that town.

Anonymous said...

It is easy to sit back and just "Talk" and say people complain without taking any action. Could that be part of the problem itself when people make blanket comments like that when they do not know who is doing what? The action things mentioned (planting tree, neighborhood watch, pick up liter, etc) and a lot more have been done by us and many others. Some of us do not have to boast, be praised, or be acknowledged for doing these things. It comes natural for us to do these things.

As for the comment that we are looking for someone to bail us out by buying our houses, the original comment made was simply not to tell us to move unless you're willing to purchase our houses. We are smart enough to know the mentality of some folks and that their solution (talk) to us would be to "just move". We do not consider moving the solution to New Albany's problems.

I never said I was looking for credit anything, and I never made any "blanket statements", you are simply trying to be argumentative for the sake of being argumentative.

You are simply missing the entire point of what I am saying. If you do things to help clean up, spruce up, and give the city a hand up, good for you and I applaud and thank you for that.

Also, I wasnt the one who first said to just move, did I? No. I assume you were the one who said if someone wanted to buy your house and you would move, sounds like you would take a bail out, does it not?

Basically, no need to be spiteful, if your taking actual action and not just talking, then I guess it doesnt apply to you does it?

shirley baird said...

New Albany may not be the "Garden Spot of the World" but it is our town and it is what we make it.

I don't intend to ever move away and I do want to do what I can to help. And no, I don't want to make a big splash so I can brag, that is not me. But I think that everyone should contribute what they can, if it means keeping your property clean or participating in a neighborhood clean up, whatever we can do.

Not everyone wants to be in the spotlight but they do a lot behind the scenes and are not recognized, because that is their choice.

Everybody whines and moans about things, that is just our nature. But we should do more than just complain. Now before you CFA members jump my case, I did not mean you. I know CFA contributes a lot and the members don't brag a lot.

It's just that everyone should do what they can with what they have. As I said earlier, keeping your property clean is a big step in the right direction. Supporting the New Albany businesses whenever possible is another big step. Even if we eat at McDonalds or White Castle, these places are ran by local people or at least employ local people. If we just stay in New Albany instead of Clarksville or Louisville we are helping our local economy.

Personally, I am seeing more people taking pride in New Albany and more interest too. Let's continue in 2010 and build on what we have done.

And by the way, I believe that more than 15 people comment on this blog, I know many more people than that read it, or so they tell me. But the number of readers does not matter, if only one person is helped by being able to express themselves on this blog then I have done a good job.

Have fun tonight everyone and be safe.

Why is Shirley Baird so excited about the $6 million dollar grant for the S. Ellen Jones area ?

She was supposed to be so interested in helping us clean up the West End
that Councilman Coffey ignores.

She fooled us all. Was she using the West End to get her name out in the political arena ?

She moved out to an upper crust area and left us with the boarded up houses and junk in the yards.

I am excited about the 6/7mill. because it will help the city. I did ask why the SEJ neighborhood was chosen over the west end and was told that there was a larger concentration of homes in the area. Several areas were checked out and SEJ was chosen.

I do not live in an "upper crust" neighborhood. I live in the same neighborhood as my childhood home. We live in an apartment, hardly a mansion.

I did not use the west end to get attention, either politically or any other way. Jim and I still have family & friends in the 1st district. And we keep in touch with them continually.

If I have offended anyone in the west end I apologize.

Anonymous said...

I AM PUZZLED AS I READ THE ABOVE COMMENT BY MS. BAIRD.

SHE SAYS THAT SHE AND HER HUSBAND LIVE IN AN APARTMENT BUILDING. THAT IS FINE, THERE AR SOME NICE APARTMENT BUILDINGS IN NA.

THEREFORE, THEY DO NOT PAY PROPERTY TAXES. HOW CAN SHE BE SO VOCAL ABOUT THE WAY THEY ARE USING OUR PROPERTY TAX MONEY ?

RUMORS ARE THAT SHE WANTS TO RUN FOR CITY COUNCIL.

IS THERE A STATE LAW THAT REQUIRES THAT A PERSON BE A PROPERTY OWNER AND PAY PROPERTY TAXES TO BE QUALIFIED TO BE A CITY COUNCIL MEMBER ? WE NEED TO CHECK THE BOOKS.

shirley baird said...

Dear anon 3:04

I don't know why you are so angry that you have to type in all caps. But I did check with "American Legal Publishing" and could not find any qualifications for political office other than being a registered voter.

It is true we are not homeowners at present but we do pay property taxes indirectly through our rental payments.

And yes, I do plan to run for City Council At Large in 2011. I have not made any public announcement because it is about 12 mos. too soon.

Anonymous said...

Ms. Baird lives in an upper crust area? Move to Silver Hills Shirley? Woods of Lafayette?

If the West End wants help, then the West End needs to help itself.

SEJ has an active neighborhood association. The West End has no neighborhood association.

Anonymous said...

The West End will never anything if all they do politically is attack other parts of town. The West End needs to be responsible for its own destiny. More neighborhood cleanups help. Neighborhood watches are good. Getting rid of Coffey would help. Welcoming people who want to start businesses in your neighborhood helps too. What is the West End doing to make itself better?

How about a New Year's resolution for the West End? How about two?

1. Stop blaming others for West End's troubles.
2. Start working to make the End End better.

If you want to stick to those two resolutions, no one is going to stop you. You don't need permission. You'll be amazed at the people who come to help if you yourselves set a good course and lead by example. Stick to these resolutions and a year from now you'll see a big change.

sounds like a quote from Chrisopher D "I am just tired or hearing West End residents whine about how bad it is without doing anything about it."

There are lots of people in the westend trying to do something about it and yes they also complain. Why is it this neighborhood or that neighborhood? Shouldn't we all be working together for all the neighborhoods. Perhaps some other neighborhoods could lend a supporting hand to the West end instead of just telling them to quit complaining about it. There is not a neighborhood in this City that doesn't complain. It is City wide problems.

Anonymous said...

typical solution on here..."quit complaining and do something" this coming from people who don't live in that neighborhood and don't know what the people are doing. There are people doing stuff!

why don't the people who make this comment do something other than just talk? Here's and idea how about saying...how can we assist? If you assist you will then be able to know and see what is being done!

I expect the response to be that "it is not your problem". Well we are one city and if one or more neighborhoods are having a problem it should be all of our problems.

"sounds like a quote from Chrisopher D "I am just tired or hearing West End residents whine about how bad it is without doing anything about it.""

I never said anything even close to that, thank you very little.

WHat I HAD said is that we ALL could do more, and I included myself in that as well.

Fill your bong with some fresh home grown, grab some muchies, chill out and actually read the posts completely.

I'd much rather held haul trash there than read trash here.

If the West End wants to have another neighborhood clean up or something, I'll be happy to help out.

Just let us know when it is.

Christopher D. angry again...the poster stated it sounded like a comment that you would make. they didn't say it was a comment you made.

you really look silly when you tell them to read the post and you are responding to something you didn't read correctly.

try and be nice chris.

I have been nice, but one person on here has a serious attitude problem with me, probably because I talked back to her crazy a$$ before, and I am friends with some one they stalked.

Christopher D. who are you implying is doing some stalking? You've never had a problem naming names before. Lay it on us.

Nope, not at all. Just not worth my time thats all. If you want to try and start crap, make sure you do a better job of it.

Besides, I dnt know where you got it from, but I dont recall naming names that much except on a few rare occassions.

Would you like to try again, or perhaps you feel inclined to make me stfu? I'm game.

Mr. Drake, the fact that your posts are being rebutted with insults and name calling instead of counterarguments just means one thing.
