COUNCIL MEETING 11/18/10:SAD DAY FOR NEW ALBANY

Thursday's city council meeting began on a high note with the Mayor encouraging everyone to participate in the Holiday Fest on Saturday after Thanksgiving. He went on to say that it is good to see New Albany having parking problems.

He discussed combining the city and county 911 operators, this will have to be done by 2014 anyway.

He also suggested a meeting with the City and County Councils in addition to the Commissioners. Additionally, CM Benedetti asked for a cost analysis of the budget.

In regard to the Ordinance to disband the Historic Preservation Commission, he suggested forming a mediation committee of council members from each district, the council president, the building commissioner and 2 members of HPC.

The next speaker was Chief Bailey who said there are plans for forums on crime prevention planned for next year and the citizens police academy will be offered again.

There were several citizens speaking against G-10-21 the Ordinance Dissolving the Historic Preservation Commission... and one person speaking in favor.

The discussion between the council members was quite heated but eventually CM Gonder called for a vote: The first and second readings had the same result, 7 nays, 1 aye ( CM Price), and 1 abstain, (CM Coffey)

The other ordinances were handled swiftly and quietly: G-10-12 (Ord. to transfer $200,000 from the Cumulative Capital Improvement Fund to the General Fund passed 9-0
Z-10-05 The new medical building on the corner of Daisy Lane and Green Valley Rd. passed 5-4 after CM Messer changed his vote from abstain to aye.

I had commented on other blogs, etc. about the behaviour of some of the council members last night. I know everyone jokes about the city council meetings being a 3 ring circus, but last night I was truly ashamed of our council. The room was filled to capacity and it was a sad sight for all of us to see.

England was pretending to be a police officer again last night. He ordered a thuggy cop after a council member because he didn't like what was being said.

England needs to go.

I have never seen such an act of aggression by a mayor. His sidekick Carl M is just as bad.

These parasites need to exterminated. Vote them out. Vote for Paul Etheredge!

BRAVO, to my Councilman Price. He knew his ordinance wouldn't pass but he exposed the Historic Group try to extort money from business.

Don't worry Grant, when it hit Judge Maria's court she'll see what we all know.

Hit Judge Maria's court...hahahaha. These guys are stupid but they're not stupid enough to keep throwing good money after their bad case. Their attorney is taking them for a ride and laughing all the way to the bank.

...he exposed the Historic Group try to extort money from business.

New Albany's preservation ordinance was enacted in 1999. Since the day it passed, the ordinance has called for fines to be levied where the ordinance is violated.

Only Citizens Faux Accountability would say enforcing an ordinance and collecting a fine is "extortion."

The primary question left unanswered was not "Does Steve Price's political career embarrass the enire city of New Albany," because that's been affirmative for too many years to count.

It was: "Why is any 'compromise' whatever necessary when 90% of COAs are approved, and only a small minority of malcontents permit their personal anger to hold sway, and differ with a proven formula for success?"

The council rightly answered this question: "Compromise isn't necessary."

Price at least voted his belief, as consistently witless as his beliefs continues to be.

Typically, Coffey could not bring himself to follow through on one of his "you and me against the world" rants, and abstained.

Sad? Maybe.

Unnecessary? Totally.

While they may look totally foolish, they have the right. It was wrong to send in the police because the argument was heated. It is a council meeting, not a classroom and even though they may have been misbehaving, you do not send in the misbehavior police.

The primary question left unanswered was not "Does Roger Baylor of the New Albany Brewing Company embarrass the entire city of New Albany," because that's been affirmative for too many years to count.

It was: "Why doesn't Roger Baylor of the New Albany Brewing Company keep his stupid mouth shut when only a small minority of malcontents even care what he has to say?"

Roger Baylor of the New Albany Brewing Company feels the need to consistently spews his vile and witless beliefs.

Sad? Most definitely.

Unnecessary? Totally.

The Police threatened to throw the council members out for having a heated discussion.

The mayor ordered the police to get involved because he did not like the way the discussion was headed.

I will be contacting various council member to complain about the mayor interfering with the process.

The power hungry mayor along with the overbearing, heavy handed, overpaid cops need to be stopped.

I am going to complain because my council member has been intimidated and was denied the chance to represent my concerns during the public meeting.

England has got to go. Vote him out.

Put the New Albany Council meetings on TV like so many cities do in America!!!
No? Wonder who doesn't want that to happen? And why is the freedom to see and hear Council meetings limited to only those who can attend meetings? Who is afraid? Who can bring New Albany into the modern world?

Anonymous said...

I think the Bridge Authority and Pro-Tolling 1SI meetings should be taped also. How about the crooked Redevelopment Board. Don't leave out the sinister NAFC School Board? The County Council needs to be taped as well.

The City Council with its paltry General Fund Budget is small potatoes. Lets monitor a $4.2 Billion Bridge fund, or a $80 million school budget instead! That's where the dough is. Let's not let the chamber of commerce and the Corporate Tribune spoon feed the public with misinformation!

The Tribune is a pawn of the US Chamber! Let's boycott the Republican RAG Newspaper the Tribune and Evening News unless they cover the real issues facing our community!

The city council meetings were shown on the NAHS channel (25) for a while but the school board said they were not educational and made them stop.

Many people went to the school board meeting and tried to prove the educational value but it did no good.

BTW Valla Ann was having the meetings professionally filmed and she paid out of her own pocket.

They print Baylor only because he attacks Democratic elected officials in City Government. He does the GOP Rag's bidding without even knowing it. Baylor has been used by the Tribune since he took the bait to write and sell the progressives down the river. If Baylor would ever start praising the Dems, Steve at the Trib and the Evening News, pawn of the Chamber, and slave to the GOP--would cut him off at the knees.

shirley baird said...

The mayor did not yell at anyone at the last meeting. The police officer calmed everyone down at his bidding.

Under the circumstances I was not ashamed of his actions but I was ashamed of the way the council members were yelling at each other. No matter how much elected officials dislike each other they are still professionals and should act accordingly.

Thank you for reporting this, Shirley. There are several things here that did not appear in the Tribune or any other blog. The Tribune, while not the "Republican Rag" suggested by comments here needs to do better, fuller coverage of events like this. As for blogs, I wouldn't qualify ANY local blog as real journalism, but yours comes as close as any.

It's a shame that this situation with windows should have become such a contentious topic at a City Council meeting. I agree with you, Shirley, that it's a moment of shame.

It's also a shame that people can people come on a blog such as this one and behave in such uncivil ways. New Albany is never going to progress until the people who live here start building each other UP, not tearing each other down.

We need to use civil language and stop trying to make up anything just to make a point.

And stop attacking Baylor. Even people who follow him know he blows a lot of smoke and people don't generally take him seriously. He DEFINITELY doesn't take anyone else seriously. NO use in talking to him.

As for using your name, Baylor thinks he's somehow on solid ground because he uses his name. Whatever. He doesn't have parents who work in the England administration or friends who might be punished because of something he writes. Use your name or not, what you say is still important.

Anonymous said...

I agree with you about not having to put your name. My mom works in the City-County building and I don't want anything I say to have an effect on her. We have a bully administration in there now and it really makes me afraid sometimes.

What I want to say is that it looks like there are a LOT of people being uncivil, and not just on blogs. In meetings too. I don't like what happened at that meeting. I felt nervous and uncomfortable. I was there, as an interested citizen, and felt uncomfortable, so I just left.

We SHOULD NOT EVER have to feel uncomfortable like that at a City Council meeting. We're all grown ups. Why don't people act like it?

I like Steve Price generally. I think he took on something that he had a personal connection to and that he shouldn't have. I didnt' think the mayor acted badly, but he normally does seem thuggy to me. I don't know why.

As for Baylor, I use to read his blog. I thought it was cool. But he goes way off with his crazy ideas and it is VERY uncool. He doesn't seem to want to get along with anybody.

Before I wrote this, I decided to check out several blogs. His had a stupid posting that calls Ed Clere "AWOL" and the "poster child" for the Bridges Authority. That's hilarious!! My uncle is involved with the Bridges Authority and Ed Clere has nothing to do with it. For Baylor to suggest that he does is nonsense.

I don't want to see the state swoop in and act all high and mighty and take away from all the work my uncle has been doing. Not that I think Ed Clere would do that. I don't. But he's right to let the people just do their job.

So, because of stupid posts like that, I take everything Baylor says with a grain of salt. And I don't read his blog much any more.

So, when people are being uncivil, I just ignore what they're saying. We need to do that so that the people who have something more positive will ever get heard!!

Anyway, that's my opinion.

Anonymous said...

I would agree the Tribune, while it is no longer a New Albany paper it truly is a Republican RAG.

All of the editorial board members are far right wing nuts. I have learned to live with it. I dropped my subscription.

Their goal is to make city government look bad until we have a Republican administration. They have the same strategy as 1SI Chamber of commerce.

shirley baird said...

Anon 12:45 and 1:51

Thank you for reading and commenting. That is why I allow anonymous postings, because sometimes people do not feel comfortable giving out their name.

I too like Steve Price, he has always been very nice to me. We don't always agree, as in the Monday meeting, but he is always willing to listen to my point of view.

Again, thanks for reading and hopefully we can meet someday.

Unfounded allegations. Outright lies. Calling people(not politicians--no fear of retribution)names such as calling a young lady "porker". Never apologizing when proved wrong because there is no accountability.

That's the problem with anonymous cowards. The good just does not outweigh the bad. In my opinion, of course.

The young lady you are referring to (Matt Nash's girlfriend) posted on this very blog and admitted that she was a "porker". How is that an unfounded allegation or an outright lie when she herself says the name she was called is true?

Now lets see if you hold yourself accountable and apologize for calling the porker statement an unfounded allegation, outright lie, or untrue description. I have a distinct feeling that you are like a few of the others wannabe's who will put their names to a post and think that provides you the right to make unfounded allegations, outright lies and call people names.

Iamhoosier said...

Unfounded allegations, outright lies, and name calling are all separate offenses, you idiot. My name is Mark and, yes, I did call you an idiot.

Interesting how you cowards don't want to talk about how chicken you really are. I can possibly buy the anonymous argument if you want to reference "city hall" but if you are referencing me or any other private citizen, what's your excuse?

shirley baird said...

NOW YOU PEOPLE ARE REALLY GETTING OUT OF HAND.

AMY DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE CALLED NAMES, ESPECIALLY BY SOMEONE WHO REFUSES TO IDENTIFY HIMSELF/HERSELF.

I HAD TO DELETE COMMENTS BECAUSE OF THE LANGUAGE WHICH WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.

Pick on Mark if you want but at least he has the guts to sign his name to his comments. And I will not ask him to refrain from posting on this blog.

A lot of people don't like what I have to say and call me a chicken or whatever, so what? I don't delete those comments either. I let people express their opinions as long as they don't abuse others.

Anyone is welcome to post their opinions and ideas as long as they don't abuse other readers. Now before you start talking about my letting comments about elected officials remain, I think that if a person puts themself out there to run for office, me included, they have to learn to live with the critizism. Again as long as the language is not offensive.

Wow, sounds like that mark chic has his panties all in a wad. There is nothing wrong with porkers. Ask Matt he likes them.

My name is Samantha and yes I too may just be a porker. Got a problem with it?

Amy said...

Mark was making a distinction between unfounded allegations, outright lies and calling people names. Yes, I admitted that I am a “porker”. I, as many of us in the City of New Albany; struggle with obesity. He did not say that the “porker” statement was an unfounded allegation or an outright lie. Mark simply pointed out that calling people names without political affliction does nothing good for the progress of New Albany.

The fact of the matter is that by remaining anonymous nothing constructive can ever be gained. However clichéd it may sound dialogue is a two way street and every so often good intentioned anonymous bloggers do raise a great view of whatever topic is being discussed. It is the ill intentioned anonymous bloggers that shed a dark shadow on issues. Without any concrete knowledge of who blogs; nothing can ever be achieved.

I have lived in New Albany since June 2009. I am a young professional with an excellent educational background. I find it amazing, that in my short amount of time in this town, how quickly I have familiarized myself with some of the inner workings. If I have an issue or problem, I bring it up at the City Council meeting. Sitting behind a computer screen complaining about issues doesn’t achieve anything besides decreased eyesight.

This town honestly amazes me on many different levels. From the growth that is happening downtown, to the growing bike lanes, the YMCA, the rich history, and right down to the blogs this town is growing and changing. I enjoy being part of this. The dichotomy that is present in New Albany is astounding. How is it that New Albany was the first elected official to publicly oppose tolls on the Bridges, however; a couple months later a councilman introduced to remove the Historical Preservation Commission?

If anyone wants anything to change they must be proactive. I have the ability to admit who I am and I am willing to talk to people face to face about my suggestions or problem. Anonymous statements hinder any positivity that could be achieved with this blog.

She reads this blog and is aware of the comments made about her. We have discussed some of the things said. But I cannot monitor this blog 24/7 so sometimes comments which need to be deleted are not done so in a timely manner.

I have also received complaints on the other side, that I favor Vicki and others. So no matter what I do, it is always wrong to some people.

As Ricky Nelson once said, "You can't please everyone so you might as well please yourself."

And THIS is the best this city has to offer? Do we have to wonder WHY our elected officials act like a bunch of pissed off monkeys? Look around this blog and others, by way of comparison our shameful council members are sane, rational, and calm in comparison to the idiotic rantings on these stupid blogs. FACT: most people in this city do not give two craps about baylor, denhart, or any of either sides heroes on here, because most people worry about REAL things in life other than the petty crap you all waste valuable time hurling insults around.

Mark has his panties in a wad

Shirley can't think for herself

How about if we offer these folks some advice so we can move on to real issue:

Amy, take a little more pride in yourself. Go on a diet and then be proud of yourself for the weight you've lost.

Mark, try wearing men's underwear and give up wearing women's panties.

Baylor, stop drinking your piss brew and just move your @ss to Kentucky.

Shirley, educate yourself so you that if you run for council you aren't just another Coffey or Price.
