LET'S SAVE OUR HISTORY

I have been very concerned about the Ordinance to dissolve the Historic Preservation Commission. Not that I am directly involved, living in an apartment complex not located in a historic district. But if we live in an historic home or not, all citizens of New Albany are involved.

There have been several historic buildings destroyed in the 1950's and 1960's, and several near misses.

When I was taking a tour of the Culbertson Mansion the tour guide told us that the home was almost torn down at one time. Can you imagine? Tearing down the Culbertson Mansion? And more recently, the Cardinal Ritter Home was saved from the wrecking ball.

I am not a member of the Historic Preservation Commission and I don't know all of the issues but I was told by a former member that their approval rate is 83 out of 84. I know there are a couple of citizens who have had problems but hopefully a compromise can be met.

As far as CM Price, the author of the Ordinance, I have known him for about seven years, and have always known him to be an honorable person. Even when we disagree, our disagreements are friendly and civil.

It appears that the meeting room in the City County Building will be crowded this Thursday. So if you plan to attend the meeting, get there early.

I contacted Councilman Price about this issue. After what he told me and he presented the facts again the HPC, I totally support what he is doing. It's a blant case of discrimination.

These businesses should be grand fathered in.

My opinion is; this is nothing but a shakedown on certain businesses certain groups don't want certain people in business. And in the Pastime case; an owner refusing to sell Baylor's beer.

There's more to this than what the Tribune is printing.

more kool aid for Baylor to dispense and of course the wannabe Baird drinks it again, u damn right its a political ploy led by baylor and pergressives to rule the roost that no longer exists, rock on steve get rid of that snob bunch of wannabes commission. get a clue baylor your days of influence are over and england and his mob are history

"These businesses should be grand fathered in."

Are you saying historic preservation should only apply to NEW buildings?

bradford and craig made very recent changes to their building. recent changes are not grandfathered in ever.

the owner of pasttimes does not live anywhere near the third district. he doesn't even live in new albany. he lives in georgetown.

ron craig's rental property is just ugly with five cars in the yard and junk on the steps all the time. ron craig does not live in the third district either. he lives in silver hills.

price is on pasttime's payroll. now price is trying to help out pasttimes.

price is a slumlord. he's trying to help out another slumlord too.

you can always count on price represent everyone except people who vote for him.

when is he going to start representing people who actually live in his district?

Sounds like Price is just voting his own pocket book again.

City funded Transfer Station to help the landlords, anyone?

That's funny. If there actually was in truth to it, I'd advocate discriminating against Applebee's, too -- at least we actually tried to make a sales call there.

LOL - My sides are hurting.

Baylor is not a member of the Preservation Commission. Baylor NEVER has been a member of the Preservation Commission.

Any beef between Price and Preservation has nothing to do with Baylor or beer.

Hey Anonymous 6:26AM,

How could this be a shakehown? Craig and Bradford SUED THE COMMISSION. The commission did not sue Craig or Bradford.

If you have any itty bitty teensy wheensy shread of evidence that this has ANYTHING AT ALL to do with selling Roger's beer, then put up or shut up.

The HPC had/has some good solid principles behind it, at least at one time. The people who helped write it, citizens, simply said you couldn't paint your house black, put vinyl on an old historic home because you couldn't tell if the wood was rotted or not and nothing could be changed from the front of the building visible to the public.

Some body else (city?) got hold of the ordinance and it has gone to hell in a hand bag. A gentleman bought a building on Market and two on Bank St. The Commission tried to make this man paint a 3 story brick building on Market that had never been painted in it's entire lifetime. Only after he threatened lawyers did they leave him a lone but boy does he have a bad taste in his mouth about trying to do business in New Albany. That wasn't the intent of the first original ordinance and still shouldn't be.

I also think the citizens of the first historic area had their district declared historical, after a lot of hard work and drew up the guidelines and HAD A VOTE on ALL OF IT. The same can't be said for the other historical areas.

If I was PastTimes I would fight to be grandfathered also. It's terrible when you can't even put in storm glass windows because they now violate the ordinance as it is now.

What about the MayTag Building? Why didn't the Commission hold their feet to the fire? How come when Scharlow's owned 6th & main their feet wasn't held to the fire on the original glass being put back in? Down at the pinkish mansion around 11th or 12th their feet was held to the fire and the Stepps paid a fortune to restore the glass in that house.

Too much wishy washy maybe maybe nots etc.

The Commission needs to get a grip but I don't know how the hey to get them to do what is right for all, not just some.

Get your damn facts straight. Neither MayTag nor Scharlow's buildings are in historic districts. Go to www.newalbanypreservation.com to see the maps yourself.

Which case are you talking about. I've never heard of the HPC making someone paint their building. The historic preservation guidelines say don't paint stuff that hasn't been painted before.

Let's hear what case you are actually talking about. I'm not sure you have your facts straight.

Please clarify whether you are saying that ALL old buildings should be grandfathered in and "historic preservation" only should apply to new buildings.

That's just silly.

Pasttime's put in its windows LAST YEAR. The historic preservation district has been around for TEN YEARS. He replaced the windows EIGHT FULL YEARS AFTER the ordinance went into effect. What the heck is there to grandfather in? Yeah a storm blew out his windows but what did he do with the insurance money? You can get insurance to cover everything to comply with newer building codes that went into effect after your building was built.

Why do the neighbors, the people who do the right thing with their properties, have to look at Pasttime's ugly property just because Grant was too greedy? Grant Richard either pocketed some of the insurance money or chose not to get insurance in the first place. The neighbors shouldn't have to pay the price for that.

WHY ISN'T STEVE PRICE LISTENING TO ANYONE WHO ACTUALLY LIVES IN THE THIRD DISTRICT?

Anonymous said...

Dan Coffey and Steve Price have not been to one Preservation Commission meeting in their lives. Not one! They speak from complete ignorance of what the commission does.

Anonymous said...

What did Doug do with the insurance money for the place who lost the roof? He didn't fix the roof he spent it on the downtown. TELL me that's legal and he spent money not approved by council.

You never have to spend a dime to undo costly work if you get a certificate of appropriateness first. The only people with problems and those who think the rules don't apply to them.

Anonymous said...

make up your mind, anonymous.

is the issue with pasttimes really about roger's beer, the mayor's spending, or anything at all related to windows? can't be all three.

Anonymous said...

What neighbors of PastTimes have a problem with his windows? Please tell.

Let me be the first to wish Vicki D. a Happy Birthday today.

Keep up the good work fighting for the little people of New Albany.

hey baylor why not boycott applebees, you bad mouthed them in your idiot blog when they first came to new albany, you are a two talking billy goat and you know you pull some strings behind that snob pres. commission yep you are a soon to be be legend in your own mind, watch your days of being the unelected mayor fade away bike boy.

Anonymous said...

Happy brthday Vicki. Keep up the good work.

Why doesn't that historic board play fair? Some business owners can do whatever they want. they let the maytag owners take down the historic sign & move it and did they ever paint the boxtree porch? That is not fair.

Another anonymous threat, from another anonymous coward.

Everyone knows I wear bike shorts for King Larry, and King Larry alone.

LOL.

Vicki, I'm proud to be part of Citizens For Accountability. We are unstoppable, so Happy Birthday an enjoy your trip.

One question. Why is Roger foaming at the mouth an attacking Councilman Price?

Anonymous said...

CFA scooped everyone. They were talking about Price and Historic Preservation last year. Check out the link.

Why is Roger foaming at the mouth?

Cause he has a thing for King Larry. He thinks his bike shorts will make the King want him.

It's going to be an interesting meeting tonight. I hope there can be a compromise and end this argument about the HPC. Please, let cool heads prevail.

I just read about the ordinance to reduce salaries for city officials in today's paper. I'll try to take comprehensive notes tonight and give a report.

Sure hope there won't be any bloodshed.

Steve Price won this round hands down. Looks like there's more shakedowns in New Albany than Doug England's doing.

How's that great wall of Bank Street?

As Reagan once said: tear that friggin wall down Baylor, your not above the law.

Anonymous said...

Steve Price won this round hands down.

If by "won" you mean no one else voted with him, citizens called him the "worst representative possible" and the police asked him to be "grown up" about the discussion, then Yes, Price won hands down.

Anonymous said...

Does Price still not get it that Baylor's building has never been in a historic district? Guess not.

Anonymous said...

And ENGLAND TRIED to have PRICE PHYSICALLY REMOVED BY THE POLICE and did not succeed, next?

AND ARE YOU KIDDING ME ABOUT MAYTAG'S OLD BUILDING AND SCHARLOW'S PURCHASE OF 6TH & MAIN NOT BEING IN A HISTORICAL AREA? WHO ARE YOU BULLSHITTING?

PASTTIMES IN IN THE FRINGE AREA OF MAIN STREET'S HISTORICAL AREA. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT and then try and bull**** us.

Anonymous said...

CORRECTION: is in the fringe area of MAIN STREET'S HISTORICAL AREA.

Anonymous said...

This is the reason England will NOT and I say NOT be reelected. How dare that SOB try to get my councilman remove.

The difference between Messer and Price is he does not kiss other peoples ass!

And, my question to Messer is: what party do you plan to run under?

shirley baird said...

Since the meeting lasted until 10:00 last night I was too tired to finish my article.

It will be posted later today.

thanks

Shirley

And ENGLAND TRIED to have PRICE PHYSICALLY REMOVED BY THE POLICE

The office asked Price to have a civilized discussion and said "we're all adults here." The police officer made no attempt to remove Price. Get your facts straight.

More so than before, all Price seems to have left in the tank is wild-eyed, formless anger directed against just about anyone and anything that he can't control or fathom.

The meeting itself was a dreary set piece contrived by Price and Coffey to play-act and grandstand for their core voting constituencies of people even angrier than them.

It wasn't even good theater, just tiresome in its senselessness.

Mrs. Baird, what are your thoughts about Price's unwillingness to attend even one HPC meeting as council liaison?

Roger Baylor said "More so than before, all Price seems to have left in the tank is wild-eyed, formless anger directed against just about anyone and anything that he can't control or fathom."

Baylor...That sounds like an accurate description of yourself. Your bad theater has become so tiresome and senseless as well.

Ms Baid what is your opinion of Baylor's formless anger directed against anyone and anything he can't control of fathom?

WHEN ENGLAND HAD HIS MELTDOWN IN FRONT OF THE COUNCIL AND CALLED HIS CONSTITUENTS NAMES WHY DIDN'T THE POLICE INTERVENE THEN?

PRICE CERTAINLY DIDN'T GO OFF LIKE ENGLAND, BUT THEN AGAIN, WHO CAN GO OFF LIKE ENGLAND?

Anonymous said...

11:35...i agree it is definately the pot calling the kettle black.

roger is just a wannabe that cant be.

Doug England sent the police in to interrupt the council discussion when he thought the outcome wasn't going to turnout his way.

He tried to silence our Council Member Steve Price!

Doug England and Carl Malyse are corrupt. Last night was a new low for these heavy handed political scum bags.

Let's vote'em out!

Anonymous said...

England is such an idiot. He sent the police into the council meeting because he wanted to make the council look bad.

All he did was confirm what we already know. England is corrupt and he will stop at nothing to get re-re-re-re-reelected.

Carl Malysas is just as creepy.

They have got to go! Both of them have made their livings off of the tax payers their entire life. The two are bloodsuckers.

I hope Paul Etheredge can save us!

Anonymous said...

The council needs no help when it comes to "Looking Bad"

The cop told Price:

"You better check yourself before you wreck yourself!"

Anonymous said...

The officer has no right to intervene in the discussion at all. He is not a member of the legislative branch. There is nothing in city code that requires adult conversation, whatever that is and if Mr. Price, Coffey and Messer want to look like idiots in public it is their right as long as the public safety is not threatened. The officer is NOT a teacher in a classroom and has no such authority to decide what is acceptable and what is not. I found is intervention to be out of line.

Had Enough said...

Your jealous of Price because he continues to get elected. Why don't you ask Dan Chandler what his plans are to run against my councilman and ask him how he got his job as Redevelopment Attorney.

Also ask him how England threaten him if he didn't take the sign down he would NOT support him against MY Councilman Price.

Tell them WHORES and SOB's yes I said WHORES & SOB's on Main Street to kiss the little people's asses they ain't a damn bit better than anyone.

Stick your holier than thou attitude where the sun don't shine.

At least we pay our property taxes and sewer bills.

That's more than they can say.

Plant your drugs on someone else, why don't ya.

Amen, you took the words right out of my mouth said...
