SEWER LINE SNAG

I read in today's "Tribune" that the developers are discovering problems with the Mid-town aka. S. Ellen Jones neighborhood's outdated sewer lines. It seems that the sewer department used to allow two homes to be hooked up to the same line back in the 1920's and 30's. Since there are probably several more of these "Y" connections in the area this needs to be addressed.

Apparently Jon-Paul Inc. did not add the cost of sewer lines in their original bid for the project. Hopefully this cost will me minimal so the project does not go far over budget.

Another problem is the cost of sewer hookups which run $1650 each. This is one case where I think the City Council should waive the connection fee. This is not a new development of expensive homes. These homes will be sold to lower income residents and costs need to be kept as low as possible. New Albany was fortunate to have this grant and we should do everything we can to keep the project going and sell these homes as quickly and economically as possible.

why should they waive the hookup fees? the sewer is separate from the project and we cann't go dragging the sewer revenues down. are you wanting us to have to have another sewer rate increase? if you run for council and are elected is this what we can expect from you, giveaways for certain people or groups? this city caters to the poor at the expense of everybody else. the city should be looking at attrating the demographics that can and will support the city and all the new restaurants, stores, and yes even roger's place. this whole thing is looking again like poor planning.

Shirley..... you and the city administration are so concerned about the S. Ellen Jones area, then,
are you all saying the West End can continue to be full of rubbish, dilapidated houses, and junk cars.

You made such a big deal that you were going to help clean up the West End and did nothing to help us in our cries for help.

Why doesn't our Councilman Coffey see all of this mess and junk in the West End ?

Anonymous said...

Is there anyone associated with this project that was also associated with Linden Meadows?

Anonymous said...

Good thought--- why didn't they put that Linden Meadows housing mess in the S, Ellen Jones or East End area.

Same old story---- dump all of the mess in the West End and spend all of the money in the EasT End.

shirley must be wanting to buy one of those houses that's why she is so quick to want to give free sewer lines and hookups.

Anonymous said...

No setting PRECEDENT, SHIRLEY. Give on exception, got to give them all an exception. Habitat doesn't get exceptions; Sister Barbara doesn't get exceptions; I could go on and on. NO, SHIRLEY.

AND, we were suppose to have ALREADY FIXED THOSE PROBLEMS. Alas.

Anonymous said...

Excuse me. Give ONE exception (fine correction). Thanks.

Good grief, this just shows your lack of knowledge of how things should be done.

Your running for Council At Large, am I correct?

You have a great deal to learn, sissy.

We're not talking about Vicki here, we are talking about SHIRLEY and how she should know we can not make exceptions because we will set PRECEDENT (a legal word) and WE CAN NOT AFFORD IT.

Like I was saying to CM Price when we were at the SEJ neighborhood revitalization kickoff ... no, wait, the neighborhood's own councilman didn't show up for that one. Must have been karaoke night somewhere.

Never mind. He doesn't mind ... why should we?

LOL.

once again baird you show how stupid you are. First its not the same sewer line, two homes two sewer laterals and a common y connection and this continued all the way into the 70's. Waiving a connection fee would not only be fiscally disasterous but subject to litigation and you want to open that pandoras box? Its too bad they dont have an IQ test for primary elections you would be disqualified from running, wont matter though you are toast on main lol.

3:36, Yep...Ted Fulmore. He got fired from Linden Meadows and England got him a job with the company doing SEJ.

Btw, Clere got us the $6.3 million for SEJ not England.

I agree, Dale Moss did a great job on: A woman working for the people.

What I thought was awesome was when he quotes her saying: "I tell my friends, I've got tire tracks on my back, she said. I guess it's like a badge of honor. But hey, I'm still standing."

That was priceless in my book.

It's ashame Mrs. Bolovchak turned her back on her community. As they say; if you can't handle the heat get out of the kitchen.

What do you think Shirley?

Anonymous said...

It's a shame Vicki is not here but traveling in Europe at the present time. Great article though, she wouldn't want credit for this either.

shirley baird said...

I also thought it was a good article about Vicki.

I must disagree with the comment about Valla Ann though. I think the community turned it's back on her.

It's difficult when a person puts themself out there and is continually criticized no matter what they do.

shirley baird said...

Getting back to the hookup fees, I have a few words to add:

We have businesses which owe thousands in unpaid sewer bills and we have individuals who are having a hard time keeping up.

Whether it be SEJ or any other neighborhood with working class residents, I believe the people need a break. I was not recommending waiving the hookup fees for Cobblers Crossing, it was for homes which will be marketed to lower income people, people who may be purchasing their first home.

I have not said anything about the West End keeping their junk cars. I want the whole city to be clean and safe. I have helped with neighborhood clean ups and have had help from just a few people. One time people from the SEJ neighborhood came and helped, namely Ted Fulmore and the late Lloyd Wimp. These people had no reason to help us other than simple kindness.

Nov. 27 3:20 - if you live in the West End, why don't you help Mr. Coffey?

Anonymous said...

In a matter of months Coffey will be voted out of office.

1) So, what you are saying Shirley is that SEJ should get a free ride ($1,600) free hook ups per property?

2) So what is your solution on collecting back taxes and sewer bills/liens?

3) Should positions or salaries be cut to balance the budget or should we use EDIT, and/or TIF money?

4) Are you in favor of annexiation?

5) Do you support the LOIT Tax?

6) What is your solutions to solving our money problems in New Albany?

7) Why are you running for Council At Large?

8) Will you support Doug England for reelection?

9) What is your solution in solving the 85% under funding of Police and Fire?

10) Do you feel City Attorney Gibson's salary is justified?

10a) Should we have a Deputy Mayor and is his salary also justified?

These are questions I would like for you to respond too.

Merry Christmas

Anonymous said...

Yes, I would like to hear your answers to these questions also.

Anonymous said...

If one cant afford the hook up fee then most likely they will not be able to afford the house in the long run. Which will again resort to run down houses, foreclosed homes and SEJ will be back right where they began. When a community's focus is soley on attracting low income residents that is what they will get.

Anonymous said...

Maybe since Vicki has so many followers that write on this blog we can get you to pass on these questions that many have asked but have always been ignored?

1. Where/when are these meetings held?
2. Does your group have a phone listing, website or Email address?
3. Are you truly registered with the Indiana Secretary of State as a PAC?
4. Have you ever read the "Freedom of Speech" blog and do you find some of its comments racist?
5. Where can I get one of those nifty T-shirts?

Inquiring minds want to know

Anonymous said...

Here we go again. I think those questions have been answered before.

The sewer fees should not be waved. This is a government project and New Directions should foot the bill. They are the ones making out like a bandit through their admin cost. 15% of 6.7million.

Anonymous said...

How else could Key Stone Restoration afford to make repairs to the tabernacle?

The owner of Key Stone Restoration wife works for New Directions and the mayor gave her company the 6.7 million contract along with giving her husband the tabernacle for 1 dollar.

the mayor has given many of his friends good deals. I wonder what they have done for him to get that kind of treatment?

To bad we don't have an honest mayor this city might actually stand a chance to improve.

Anonymous said...

Price was right when he said its a fratunity of corruption.

Fulmore worked for CHDO and got city money

Fulmore works for New Directions now

Lisa works for New Directions

New Direction gets city money

Lisa's husband owns Key Stone Restoration

Key Stone gets Tabernacle for 1 dollar

Steve Rush owns Baylor's building and gets new side walks

Rush then gets Shrader Stables for little or nothing.

Mayor gives New Horizen six parcels of land for 100,000 well under value.

The mayor is a crook who buys his support.

While secrets from WikiLeaks were splashed all over the American newspapers, I couldn’t help but wonder: What if China had a WikiLeaker and we could see what its embassy in Washington was reporting about America? I suspect the cable would read like this:

Washington Embassy, People’s Republic of China, to Ministry of Foreign Affairs Beijing, TOP SECRET/Subject: America today.

Things are going well here for China. America remains a deeply politically polarized country, which is certainly helpful for our goal of overtaking the U.S. as the world’s most powerful economy and nation. But we’re particularly optimistic because the Americans are polarized over all the wrong things.

There is a willful self-destructiveness in the air here as if America has all the time and money in the world for petty politics. They fight over things like — we are not making this up — how and where an airport security officer can touch them. They are fighting — we are happy to report — over the latest nuclear arms reduction treaty with Russia. It seems as if the Republicans are so interested in weakening President Obama that they are going to scuttle a treaty that would have fostered closer U.S.-Russian cooperation on issues like Iran. And since anything that brings Russia and America closer could end up isolating us, we are grateful to Senator Jon Kyl of Arizona for putting our interests ahead of America’s and blocking Senate ratification of the treaty. The ambassador has invited Senator Kyl and his wife for dinner at Mr. Kao’s Chinese restaurant to praise him for his steadfastness in protecting America’s (read: our) interests.

Americans just had what they call an “election.” Best we could tell it involved one congressman trying to raise more money than the other (all from businesses they are supposed to be regulating) so he could tell bigger lies on TV more often about the other guy before the other guy could do it to him. This leaves us relieved. It means America will do nothing serious to fix its structural problems: a ballooning deficit, declining educational performance, crumbling infrastructure and diminished immigration of new talent.

The ambassador recently took what the Americans call a fast train — the Acela — from Washington to New York City. Our bullet train from Beijing to Tianjin would have made the trip in 90 minutes. His took three hours — and it was on time! Along the way the ambassador used his cellphone to call his embassy office, and in one hour he experienced 12 dropped calls — again, we are not making this up. We have a joke in the embassy: “When someone calls you from China today it sounds like they are next door. And when someone calls you from next door in America, it sounds like they are calling from China!” Those of us who worked in China’s embassy in Zambia often note that Africa’s cellphone service was better than America’s.

Anonymous said...

But the Americans are oblivious. They travel abroad so rarely that they don’t see how far they are falling behind. Which is why we at the embassy find it funny that Americans are now fighting over how “exceptional” they are. Once again, we are not making this up. On the front page of The Washington Post on Monday there was an article noting that Republicans Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee are denouncing Obama for denying “American exceptionalism.” The Americans have replaced working to be exceptional with talking about how exceptional they still are. They don’t seem to understand that you can’t declare yourself “exceptional,” only others can bestow that adjective upon you.

In foreign policy, we see no chance of Obama extricating U.S. forces from Afghanistan. He knows the Republicans will call him a wimp if he does, so America will keep hemorrhaging $190 million a day there. Therefore, America will lack the military means to challenge us anywhere else, particularly on North Korea, where our lunatic friends continue to yank America’s chain every six months so that the Americans have to come and beg us to calm things down. By the time the Americans do get out of Afghanistan, the Afghans will surely hate them so much that China’s mining companies already operating there should be able to buy up the rest of Afghanistan’s rare minerals.

Most of the Republicans just elected to Congress do not believe what their scientists tell them about man-made climate change. America’s politicians are mostly lawyers — not engineers or scientists like ours — so they’ll just say crazy things about science and nobody calls them on it. It’s good. It means they will not support any bill to spur clean energy innovation, which is central to our next five-year plan. And this ensures that our efforts to dominate the wind, solar, nuclear and electric car industries will not be challenged by America.

Finally, record numbers of U.S. high school students are now studying Chinese, which should guarantee us a steady supply of cheap labor that speaks our language here, as we use our $2.3 trillion in reserves to quietly buy up U.S. factories. In sum, things are going well for China in America.

Thank goodness the Americans can’t read our diplomatic cables.

Embassy Washington.
