SEE YOU LATER, BARON

Baron Hill  is visiting every county in the 9th District, but not to say goodbye.  He started this morning in Salem, and is ending the day in Clarksville, visiting 10 cities in 48 hours.  He called it his "See You Later" tour.

He stopped by the Floyd County Democratic Headquarters this evening to have a quick but meaningful visit with some of his constituents.  He was very frank and open, as always, and answered our questions.

He is very concerned about Congress, as are many others.  He said the new Congress Members are mostly newly elected as are many other elected officials, including clerks.  The clerks, many which are untrained, will be in charge of the 2012 elections and there will be mistakes. (Thankfully the voters of Floyd County have re-elected Linda Moeller so we are in good shape.) The untrained Congress Membership is much more frightening.  It's going to be totally new territory for many.

Baron is unsure about his own future but he has been talking to a lot of people and he is very hopeful. (He did say, however that Betty wants him to stay off the campaign trail for a little while). He promised to stay informed politically and keep us here in New Albany informed as well.  He was happy to say that his staff members are finding new positions, both locally and in Washington.  As he said, that just shows what a good reputation his employees enjoy.

I just want to wish Baron the best here on this blog as I did downtown. Hopefully soon we will have to opportunity to welcome him back into public service. (fingers crossed)

RE: Todd Young's position on tolls. I suggest contacting his office.

Personally, I have not made any contact with Mr. Young or his office.

All that Hope and Change got B.Hill out of office. Thanks to all the Floyd Democrat for voting him out!!!!!!

Pay backs are hell.

Yes, the people were upset with the President and voted out a lot of Democrats because of it.

The same thing happens every time we have an unpopular President.

We'll just have to wait and see how the Tea Party does in the next two years.

That's just it, Shirley, you haven't contacted Todd Young's office. My question to you is, why not? Is it that the only Congressman that can be YOUR Congressman MUST be a Democrat?

I ask this not to be adversarial, but to challenge you.

For example, I, a Republican, have contacted Baron Hill's office many times, always in the spirit of public service. I have requested information, asked him challenging questions, requested that he vote for or against this bill or that...in short, I considered him my representative in Congress and treated him with the respect accorded to him due to his position in office.

This polarizing attitude that I hear and read really needs to stop. Why can't some of our Democrats help lead the charge in bringing the local political scene out of it's paralyzed state and into a new world where we can move past this Democrat/Republican thing.

This is why, frankly, I've always admired such public servants as Lee Hamilton and Frank O'Bannon. They transcend party.

Bring this attitude to today's public official. As far as I'm concerned, the jury's still out on Todd Young and Ron Grooms, but how about State Representative Ed Clere? Here's a young man who transcends party, yet you dismiss him out of hand and even seem angry that he won.

Please remember that ANYONE who serves the public must bear all the pressures of office, whether it be the City Clerk or the President of the United States. I have long held to the notion that being helpful is better than being hurtful. Your blog can help with this, for you can either have this be the "Democrats Haven Blog" or the "We Serve the People Blog."

It's your choice.

I said that I had not contacted Mr.Young's office yet, not that I would not do so.

Since they are still in transition, I want to wait a few days before calling.

Please don't judge me without knowing the facts. Mr. Young is now my Representative as was Mr. Hill, and I will contact his office when I need to.

Shirley, I am not judging you, nor did I say you would never contact his office. It is a challenge--a challenge to keep partisanship at bay. Not just to you, but to all your readers. It is important that we learn, in this day and age, to move past labels and try to get the job done for the PEOPLE!

Dear 12/30 1:31PM

I apologize for my "do not judge me" remark. That was written in haste.

If I only allowed people to comment if they agreed with me, I might as well eliminate comments all together.

When I started this blog I wanted an open forum for everyone to express their views as long as they did not threaten, or slander anyone.

I will strive to keep this blog as bi-partisan as possible.

Thanks for reading and thanks for caring.

It's an admirable ambition, Shirley. But, that being said (and not to be mean), BUT, this position may be hard to hold to if you are planning on running for office -- especially when it comes to local politics and the people in the game. I wish you nothing but luck though in trying to be bi-partisan. The best politicians are the ones that CAN work both sides of the aisle and keep their integrity.

Happy New Year

Apology accepted, Shirley.

I admire what you do and am grateful for this blog. You are an excellent blog administrator and I especially appreciate that you've taken care of the nasty language.

I look forward to future bi-partisan spirit and the chance to show my support for ALL public servants, even when I disagree with them.

Thanks again, Shirley, and I wish you a Happy New Year!

RE: Bi-partisanship:

If I am successful in my run for office I will have to work with members of both parties. But that being said, I have always respected people from both parties and I am friends with people of both parties and outside of politics.

Just because a person is a registered Democrat or Repulican does not make it impossible to see and understand the other side's opinion.

We had a very tough election in 2010. There was a lot of bitterness on both sides and we need to put that behind us. Hopefully this year we can.
