I want to thank my beautiful granddaughter, Katrina for attaching these links.

I think it's great that you've posted a platform at FB. I'm working on mine. I was wondering if you could explain these passages:

The downtown area has seen a lot of revitalization in the past few years and this needs to continue, but not at the taxpayers expense.

and

The S Ellen Jones neighborhood has seen major improvements due to the grant. I would like to see this happen in other neighborhoods as well, all over the city.

Now, the grant for revitalization comes from taxes, right? Are you saying it's okay for the taxpayers expense to be used in the form of neighborhood assistance (housing upgrades) and not for the downtown area?

Where does the downtown end and the neighborhoods begin?

What if the taxpayer money was used to support housing in the downtown area?

I'm not arguing with you, just asking for a clarification. Thanks. You and I are at the top of the at-large chart - alphabetically.

Thanks, Katrina. This is very helpful. And thanks, Ted and Shirley.

The link to the form doesn't work.

shirley baird said...

First I want to say that I am very happy about the changes being made downtown. I have always believed that the downtown is the heart of any city.

The "not at the taxpayers expense" comment was referring to the proposed plaza on Main and Pearl Sts. While I would love to see this happen I don't want the taxpayers to have to foot the bill for the parking garage. I'm sure there can be other ways to make this work. I would not be opposed to tax incentives. At this time I just don't think it's wise to ask the city to come up with that much cash.

The New Albanian said...

Then for the sake of clarity, permit me to suggest that you include the specific reference as component of the downtown plank. Thanks. We're both going to be asked quite a few questions like these.

shirley baird said...

Very sorry about the link, she had it working last night.

It is a form to identify vacant houses in the Midtown neighborhood. Please contact Ted Fulmore for a copy.

shirley your best to keep your distance from baylor. let him know you can run your own campaign and tell him to stick to his. for the sake of clarity, give him specific as to what component of your backside he can kiss.

shirley baird said...

I am running my own campaign. I have not joined forces with anyone nor have I cut any deals.

I don't work like that. I want to represent all of the people of New Albany, not just a few.

Anonymous said...

@ 10:07 AMEN. Really, Shirley, I have to agree. I like you very much, and I think you need to be on the council. But that Baylor guy is like vitriol (a poison acid). It's best to stay away from him.

The New Albanian said...

As for me, it isn't my intention to run with or against any Democrats.

It's way more fun to run against Republicans, who currently are the big problem, although it's funny how many so-called Democrats keep parroting GOP lines and defending the offenders.

Insofar as a Democrat feels offended, too, maybe there's a reason for that. I thank Shirley for her clarification.

baylors gonna kick your *&####* for third spot Baird

shirley baird said...

@ 7:02 Think again.

Anonymous said...

7:02, there's no way Baylor's gonna kick Shirley's *&####*. Baylor's platform is...well..Baylor. Not much good can come of that. Thank GOD people are onto him.

“As for me, it isn't my intention to run with or against any Democrats. It's way more fun to run against Republicans, who currently are the big problem. . .”

Wow, republicans currently are our big problem? We have a completely democrat city administration and a democrat control council that consist of one lone republican and he feels the republicans are the big problem? It sounds like he has presented a good case for not electing democrats in this city. If the democrats are so weak that a lone republican has been able to have such control, think of what all can actually get accomplished in our city if there weren’t all those powerless democrats in office and instead they were filled by republicans.

shirley baird said...

@ 10:36 Please do take that seriously. There are 6 Democrats running at large so we are forced to run against other Dems.

I don't see us as a weak party, we just need to work together to get things done. That is what I intend to do and would appreciate your vote.

thanks

shirley baird said...

@ 8:37 Thank you. I truly appreciate your confidence in me.

Anonymous said...

10:36 Great point and to think it came about from Baylor. I agree with Shirley everyone should seriously consider your view point.

shirley baird said...

Speaking of view points; please check out Adam Dickey's guest column in todays "Tribune" it is excellent.

Anonymous said...

Looks like Shirley reads the Tribune and she is not even the City Attorney.

Anonymous said...

Adam Dickey is a hack. Every time he gets up to speak (which, I admit, I haven't heard him do since Baron Hill lost the election), he sounds like he considers himself the Great Orator of the millennium. I read his article and didn't think much of it.

As for local Democrats, the ones currently in office have sickened me to the point where I'm on the precipice of joining the other party. Get online and read the platforms of the Democratic and the Republican parties. There's nothing so crazy about the Republicans, especially when you consider what we've got going on downtown on Tuesday nights.

Add to that, some of the characters we've got on the ballot--you can see why it's going to be a difficult election. Who can we vote FOR? Baylor? No, no, NO! England? I'd jump off the Sherman Minton Bridge first AND pay a $3.00 toll for the privilege.

Shirley, you have the potential to be a wonderful City Councilperson. Just don't let the Old Guard turn you into an Adam Dickey.

Unfortunately, our party hasn't got any upcoming local political talent. If Dickey's our best Golden Boy, then our future is really bleak.

Anonymous said...

State turns away New Albany’s $701,000 appeal City budget about $3 million short of projected spending

England hinted salary reductions may be suggested for administration officials, but did not specify what positions could see a reduction in pay or how likely the proposal is to happen.

Shirley what do you think. Do you think England should do salary reductions for administration officials?

Daniel Short said...

Adam Dickey was not calling for compromise while working for Hill. He wasn't thinking about other view points while holding the microphone at IUS. He is setting up a run. This is classic politics. Distance yourself from the man you worked for now that he is unemployed. Textbook BS.

Anonymous said...

adam dickey is a baron hill loser, you NA democrats are sunk, only one worth voting for is Price and Denhart

Anonymous said...

Amen, Danny!

5:21, Denhart and Price are NOT the only ones worth voting for. Price has yet to prove himself worthy of my vote.

Denhart is the ONLY person in New Albany who won't play the games of our local politicians. I would be glad to vote for her, but live in Dist. 3.

6:07, you're absolutely right. If Dickey is our golden boy, then our party is sunk. Our party put all our money behind the worst "golden boy" in Floyd County history (Gibson) and we ended up with a big loser (as I predicted).

Now, we've put out a list of dark horse candidates, and a few good ones and I have no idea what will happen. I hope we'll lose the good ol' boys. Fast.

Shirley, I agree that you have the potential to be a very good leader and you'll help yourself greatly if you distance yourself from the established riff-raff. These people who have a stronghold on our community are dangerous, and the self-styled progressives downtown would make our party implode if they won election.

Stand on your own. You're really doing an admirable job.

Anonymous said...

Daniel, this is classLESS politics. That's what it is.

shirley baird said...

I posted the other comments earlier but did not have time to comment myself.

Adam is not currently a candidate for any office but if he was I would vote for him. I would also vote for Baron Hill should he run again. But that's just my opinion.

Also I still think it was a good article and I don't think Adam considers himself any kind of "Golden Boy".

I will say again, I have not aligned myself with anyone, candidate of not. My campaign is being ran by my daughters, one is my manager and the other is my treasurer, my husband has been talking to people also. None of them are involved in politics, they are just doing this for me. It's strictly a family affair.

Anonymous said...

Once again Shirley. Can you respond with your thoughts this time?

Do you think England should do salary reductions for administration officials?

Anonymous said...

I think Dickey thinks mighty highly of hisself. He gave a speech one time at the Veteran's Memorial Day thing down on Market, and I thought he went way to far in his speech he gave in the place of Baron Hill. Everybody just stood there and started getting board. It really was boring. I know I'm not the kind of speaker that would be any better, but I don't act like I'm getting in line to run for something either. Dickey's high on Dickey.

shirley baird said...

@ 6:24 Sorry, I was not ignoring you.

I think the higher paid positions such as Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Board of Works, Redevelopment are very well compensated and could stand to take a salary reduction. It would to a long way to show good will as well as help with the budget. I don't think the clerks, administrative assistants, bookkeepers and people in this salary range should have to take a cut. They are already at a low salary.

Anonymous said...

you are so bogus Baird, you were all for Englands Salary proposals when he took office now you say cut them, typical politician, flipper must be your favorite TV show cause thats how you are and anybody who thinks so highly of prima donna adam dickey like you do deserves to lose just like all the good ole boy dems in this town, BAYLOR For Council!

shirley baird said...

Excuse me but I did not say anything about Mr. England's salary proposals at the time.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, Shirley, but your endorsement of Dickey's article makes me rethink my inclination to support you in your race. After calling himself a "principled man," the self-aggrandizing Dickey continues his screed by supposing that he knows anything about what's going on at the statehouse.

For the record, Republican House Speaker Bosma has shown extraordinary bi-partisanship in his leadership. Since I'm at home recovering from surgery, I'm watching the statehouse every day online and reading everything I can get my hands on to try to understand all this. Two things come to light:

1. You ought to be, in bi-partisan fashion, recommending the report of your own state representative, Ed Clere, who is doing a helluva job of giving us more information than can be had just about anywhere else. For example, the media keeps saying that "three Democrats have stayed" at the statehouse. No, only ONE has stayed. The others have changed with some frequency, and I've seen different ones in there calling for a quorum, just as Mr. Clere said.

2. That a lot of people don't appear to really understand the seriousness of this situation. It ought to bother all of us to hear that union reps would come to southern Indiana to visit a legislator's WIFE. Something like that turns this series of events into something more sinister. As for a shutdown of Indiana government, this needs to be laid at the feet of the one who is leading his caucus in the wrong direction. Here in this country, we use the proper channels to get legislation through and the Republicans had to suck it up when bills they thought were bad passed easily in a Democratic majority. Democratic leaders make us all look bad when they change the rules in the middle of the game.

shirley baird said...

I an sorry that you feel that way about me. But I don't know anyone who does not understand the seriousness of the situation in the Statehouse.

Also, I don't recall every saying that Mr. Clere was not doing his job.

Anonymous said...

Well, I would LIKE not to feel that way, Shirley, but Dickey's guest column was irresponsible. Your subscribing to it surprises me. I've always considered you to be someone who thinks things through, without bowing to party lines. There have been those who have made fun of you for this, and I've stood by you. But a message like what Dickey spouted forth, while at the same time congratulating himself on being "a principled man" himself, is NOT where we ought to be as a party. We know that the unions are behind Bauer's continued stay in Illinois. We know that today's unions are not those of yesterday. As for Bauer himself, well, I received the most heinous postcards this county has probably ever seen during an election season, and I will not soon forgive Bauer for that.

I WANT to vote for you, Shirley. I'll just keep my eye out on how much you're going to align with the hard-core Republican haters. They have NO interest in "compromise," and that goes for Dickey, too. He can write the word, but it's not what he apparently means.

Also, I didn't say that you're saying Clere isn't "doing his job." However, I see your support of what he's doing as guarded, at best, and I don't see any support for his neighbor legislator, State Rep. Steve Stumler. Both of these men are doing a hard and thankless job and NEED the support of the truly progressive thinkers of Floyd and Clark counties.

I wonder if there was any truth to the Mayor oweing 17,000 in unpaid property taxes? I was hoping to see something in the paper about that.

Anonymous said...

you have always knocked ed clere and you were shane golden boy gibsons biggest cheerleader just like you are adam prima donna dickeys. Why, because you suck up to the old guard democrat party, wake up baird youre going to lose and you have no credibility

shirley baird said...

I have always tried to be impartial and to respect everyone. That is all I can say. People will believe what they want.

All I can say is time will tell that I have been truthful.

Anonymous said...

You're going to "be truthful." But still act like you do...Just not say anything to support two really good statesmen from our own area. It's kind of like you saying it by what you're not saying.

It's a shame because I heard Ed Clere once make a really nice comment about you, and I could tell he meant it.

shirley baird said...

I have always gotten along well with Mr. Clere on a personal basis, I just don't always agree with him. Nor do I always agree with anyone including Shane Gibson or Adam Dickey.

I agree that Mr. Clere is doing a good job, but I cannot say that I agree with his ideas about Gov. Walker and the situation there.

Anonymous said...

I loved Baron Hill but I always felt he surrounded himself with some bad people, like Dickey.

I'll never understand that one.

If you have been involved in the Democrat Party long enough, you too would have had your fill of Dickey.

Anonymous said...

I'm so glad to hear Shirley show her bi-partisan attitude. There are not many around here who would say that. She has to be careful, though, and admit she likes Ed too much. You know who might start writing about her.

Anonymous said...

who you support for mayor baird? come on gutless take a stand

shirley baird said...

Call me gutless if you want but I am too busy with my own campaign to campaign for a mayor. I get along well with all three candidates and I could work with any of them.

To Shirley and 6:24. I would really like to know how you would feel if your employer came to you and said "We are going to cut your pay?" Who on this blog would be happy to take a pay cut, at any job? Who on this blog would be willing to be Mayor of a city where everyone complains about everything, for less money?

Marie, I doubt that anyone on here would be happy if they had to take a pay cut, but many many people in the past several years have had to do just that. When they consider the alternative, it is a small prce to pay. A better question to ask would be, who on here or in city government would rather take a pay cut than to have no job at all? I bet even you Marie, if you work, would rather take a pay cut than to lose your job and have no pay at all.
